sdsurf
Anyone rebuild one? If so were you able to get the seal for the splined shaft? Also, for those that have traken it out; did you find it easier to leave the column in the car or take out the entire assembly? thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The steering box and column is one piece. Well you could dismantle it by unscrewing the column but the worm gear comes out and the balls all fall out. (do not ask) Better to take it all out to work on. Center the steering and remove the pitman arm from the sector shaft with gear puller, unbolt top and lift the sector shaft up and out. Don't turn steering! The lower seal is pressed up into the case and may have a washer with a cir-clip under it (the 280z and 720 does, don't remember the 521/620) remove the seal downward and out. pop in new seal. datzenmike
When I screwed it back in I turned the wheel to test it and the worm pushed the plug out of the front! Sort of like a frost plug you push into place and hammer the middle to spread it. What a bitch! Quote Link to comment
sdsurf
What did you do at that point? Mine isn't pushed all the way out but it is leaking. I think I will pull everything back out and use another box housing I have and assemble it the correct way.
