lukey
what kind or horsepower are you all pulling with your engines? would like both flywneel and rear wheel numbers. debating on whether to build the L20B, or upgrade to another 4cyl, or go V6/V8 route. aiming for an all around type truck here...I grew up around drag racing musclecars, originally got this truck to build a strip only vehicle, but after reading some posts here, thinking that has changed...let me know what you all think. datzenmike
Stock L20B, about 90 engine hp? My Z24 is about the same but about 30% more torque than the L20B. Generally L 18 is 80 hp and L16 about 70. Give or take a hamster or two. Quote Link to comment
philip1
the L-series is a very tunable engine. they respond well to mods but you have to do the right ones. Intake: 1. A weber 32/36 down draft is a good start it will give a small improvement in performance. Performance is better with other mods. Difficulty = Easy 2. Dual SU's add about 10% to existing power easy to tune if you are mechanically inclined. these respond very well to other mods. Difficulty = Medium 3. Dual Weber/Mikkuni/Solex side drafts. these are great for making max power. you will not see a huge change in performance without other mods. Difficulty = medium-high 4.EFI this will run a lot like the dual webers but tuning is set and forget. Installation is much harder than carbs. Difficulty = high Cam: 1. Stock L20 cam has same profile as the lauded SSS cam Smooth idle OK power 2.Nissan L7 rally cam mild lumpy idle likes higher compression 9.0:1 or higher 3. race cams lumpy idle these like high compression and are often not terribly streetable. Heads: 1. U67 stock L20 square port head 45cc chamber "Open Chamber" 1.375in ports OK na... Good for turbo. 2. A87 either open chamber or closed if closed chamber is 38cc? ports are usually smaller 1.25in but can be ported to L20 specs or bigger. good NA head better for turbo than the u67 if closed chamber. 3. 219 the legend everyone wants this head small kidney shaped chambers big L20 size ports this is the holy grail of stock heads. if you find one BUY IT. Exhaust: 1. Stock 4-2-1 manifolds and down pipe will flow enough for 90% of street applications. go 2 inch on smaller engines and 2.25inch on larger for the exhaust after this. 2. 4-1 header This will move power up in the rev range. Good for racing not the best idea for the street. 3. 4-2-1 header think of this as a light weight stock setup I hope this tiny list of common mods helps 3 Edited July 17, 2009 by philip1 Quote Link to comment
