A couple months ago I bought a '79 620 for the L20B and 5-speed for my '71 521... After handing over the cash and driving it on the car trailer we were on our way... This truck being a Calif. truck had all of the smog crap on it... I got it home and started looking at it closer and noticed that it was not an L20B but an L18 that someone had moved all of the smog onto... Pulled the engine and trans, pulled all of the smog crap off and got it ready for the 521... when I pulled the 620 oil pan off I found 24 cents (1 dime, 2 nickels , and 4 pennies) in the bottom... Never heard of change in the bottom of an oil pan before...
Just thought this was all a weird experience...

The problem is that we had the truck started and running, but ended up having to change the gaskets because they were wrong(This is on a L20BT 0 Miles on it). When it was reassembled we couldn't get a spark and found out we had power going to both sides of the coil. I haven't had a chance to go back out and check the coil yet, but being that the wires from the black box go to the coil I didn't know if running power to both of the wires on the black box would fry it...
I will be back out on the morning checking everything
Thanks in advance for the help

If for some reason I fried the black box on the side of my dizzy is there any others donors besides either buying a new one or from the typical dizzy donors?

In the Dime Quarterly Volume 7 Issue 1 there was an article on the rebuild. You can get a rebuild kit at The Transmission Exchange in Portland for about $58. That only includes all the bearings. I'm sure when call them they can get the synchro's if you need them.
There number is 800-776-1191. They did us OK. You will need a press and bearing pullers of course.
I'm in Marysville just north of Sac if you wanted that issue for the rebuild... kinda oily though

We have built an L20B turbo motor with a rebuilt corvair turbo than will put out max of 5-7 PSI??? The motor is bored 40 over with stock compression turbo pistons. Which gaskets, if any, need to be copper? We heard you need copper gaskets...
Thanks in advance

My dad is wanting to put a stock radio in his truck for nostalgic reasons... If anyone has one in working order with the knobs and not expensive let me know...

Thank you everybody for the responses. I already have HOW TO KEEP YOUR VOLKSWAGON ALIVE but it doesn't answer some questions i have. I'll try samba. If anybody can answer my questions here? I'm wondering which engine parts are interchangable. I've found cylinder/pistons for sale but I have an AE 60 horse dual port engine. I believe it has 85mm pistons. Wondering if other sizes can be used on the same block?

I've been a ratsun member for a long time and love the format here. I now came into a 68 baja bug but know nothing about vw's. Is there a forum out there with the same format as ratsun, ie... no "special feature vehicles", no commercials, just enthusiasts helping enthusiasts. Somewhere i can ask a stupid question and they don't make you feel like a dumbshit, or does that just go along with the territory when your a nubie?

Does anyone have one for sale???
Thanks

I've been in the Air force for 23 years as a supply guy and supply systems analyst. While I was stationed in Heidelberg Germany with the Army I saw how they treated the troops. I was in Army base housing and also received a substandard housing allowance because the housing sucked. I have yet to still be deployed to the desert(lucky). That usually doesn't happen. My son is also Air Force for the last 3 years and he is getting ready to deploy for the second time and drive on convoys with the Army for 8 months.
Take your time picking which one fits you
Good luck

I was 17 in 1984 when I got my '71 510 wagon... Let me figure it out... I guess that makes me 42... and I have '72 2door and '71 521 pickup...

Did this problem ever get fixed? My friend is having the exact same problem... New Weber 32/36, distributor, fuel filter, and changed the fuel pump. Still dying at high RPM's in the higher gears. If you keep the RPM's down it doesn't die... We haven't changed any fuel line yet... He is doing that today...

I got some of these rims without lug nuts...
I've tried a couple of different auto parts stores and can't seem to find the lug nuts... Tell me these aren't a Nissan only part!
Thanks in advance

This is my dad's truck so I don't think he will be racing. These are low compression pistons but he will be using a turbo setup that will put out around 5 PSI or so.
Thanks

Nobody else posted it yet so I thought I would...

This is on the Wolf Creek Racing site:
4 Cylinder Competition Head Gasket - NOS Nissan Motorsports 11044-A7651 ($79 list)..L-series..........................$60
That is the 88.5mm head gasket. Is 88.5 too big for the 86mm bore?
Thanks

I was searching for the head gasket for an L20B that has been bored out 40 over. I set the stock head gasket on it and it is to small. Are people using head gaskets from the Z20 or Z22's?
Thanks

How can you tell which one it came off of? The head was off of the motor when we got it.
