  1. I have a SSS distributor for sale if it's of any interest at all. The body of it has been polished, looks lovely.

I am in the UK, so postage to France wouldn't be a problem.

Let me know if it's something you might be interested in.

    Cheers,

    JK

  2. Well it's been very slow progress here in the UK with my 510, but I got an update yesterday with a few images showing some of the fabrication work being undertaken, pictures (before and after) attached, not in any particular order though, sorry.

It looks really good quality work, sadly I've resigned myself to the fact that it won't be ready for Le Mans Classic in July. Oh well always next year....😔

    Cheers,

  3. Thanks for all the input, and after much debate and discussion I've decided to go stock blue in the end...:D

This isn't mine, it's a friends, but I think it will contrast well with the Safari Gold engine bay after all and the colour code I understand is Fathom Blue/Deep River/ Dolphin 18C39 BS4800/5252

I think the other thing you should think about Is the color of the engine bay....

Sounds like the car is about to be painted....

If the car , engine bay and engine are all gold that going to be alot...

I'd match either the engine bay or the engine to something like the interior or your wheels if the have a color on them....

Yeah that was my other concern, too much of the same colour....hmmm, more thinking needed....

Call me what you will, but I like two colors for an engine block. Stock color or black.

If you ask Ray (@mrbigtanker) everything should be red.

The stock color for an L motor is a nice pastel sort of blue. I believe some guys here have used Pontiac blue, but I've had good luck with Chrysler light blue.

Thanks for that, I'm not keen on the blue which it currently is as it matches nothing else and the car will not be stock so I don't need authenticity. Black just doesn't do it for me....

  6. I'm not quite ready to do it yet, but when the times comes I want to paint my engine block.

It's currently blue (urggh) and my favorite plan at the moment is to go body coloured - the car will be 920 Safari Gold.

So, my question is, has anyone else painted their block body colour?

The rocker cover is polished, as are the carbs and the manifold and a few other bits and pieces, the head will be vapour blasted, sump probably black (opinions welcome here too) and the wiring is all going to be hidden away as much as possible, battery is being moved to the boot (trunk 😁) so I'm hoping that the engine will be quite visible on the whole.

So if anyone has a better idea or some images of what can be done I'd be grateful.

    Cheers,

you likely have more experienced "coachbuilders" in the UK, that sometimes work on the cheap! 😎

Well I wouldn't say he works on the cheap exactly..... 💰

But I came to terms with the cost versus the finished quality before committing to the build.

  8. Thanks Yenpit, and yes I have seen KF's stuff, but the guy who's doing my metal work is confident he can fab anything we might need, so hopefully I won't need any panels..!

The car was a South African import so it could have had anything done to it at some point in it's life over there.

At least doing it this way there will be no hidden surprises or patching over rust only for it to appear again in a few months.

    Cheers,

  9. This was never going to be a build thread, I'm no good at stuff like that but in case anyone is interested here, after deciding to 'Keep the faith' and continue with my little car, are the latest pics 😄

A couple of it stripped and ready to go for an acid bath and then a couple post dip

I'm quite happy with the result after dipping, I expected holes but floors look great, on to the next stage soon I hope 🙂

I may update this again at some point

I know Mario personally, I was at his shop the last 2 days. I will try not to forget to remind him. There I believe 350.00 USD. Nice product though

That would be great if you could jog his memory for me, we've messaged on Instagram since early May but I don't seem to be getting anywhere...👍

if you are on instagram search for TSR fabrication. He is pricey but makes nice stuff.

I've been trying to get him to sell me some of those billet gas struts like yours for months, but despite him telling me he'll sort it he never does...maybe it's because I'm in the UK. Anyone fancy helping me out and buying them from him and shipping for me..

Thankyou guys. I have found a company in the UK who will strip and rebuild and paint for £75 per caliper plus £8. if they have to custom make the pistons. I have got someone in the UK possibly helping me out with replacement discs and I have the rear brake cylinders and shoes online as they are the same as the UK Triumoh Herald. Thanks as always for your very kind assistance.it would appear the SA  510 has some variances of its own

Who's the UK company Martin....I  may need them too going forwards..?

Well the watermelon wagon engine bay version 2. I know I know it could of been cleaner, its the best I can do. I changed some things to be cleaner.

    MAP sensor in cab now

Header was installed this time with steering box out as it won't go in with it in. It was scratched up pretty good.

Routed both engine and valve cover vents to catch can

Pulled all the coil brackets off and cleaned it up by mounting vertical and shorter wires.

Of course went back to a little red under the hood

    All new wire harness

Most all nuts and bolts that were not changed out now are

Re did the brake lines again, not the best but way better.

These items are to just to name a few.

Do you know which type of bracket you ordered to fit that Chase Bays coolant overflow tank to your car? There seems to be five choices and I'm not sure which one is best...?

    Thanks again,

    JK

PS Your car is just beautiful 😍

I also used the same Ford Escort steering rack in my R&P conversion that JBC uses.  The Escort in question is from a MKII European Ford Escort (like previously stated, much cooler than the what we got here in the states: Examples).  In the stock application, the rack is "front steer" in that it is positioned in front of the front wheels and steers them accordingly.  For use in our cars, the rack is positioned behind the front wheels.  So that the rack pushes the wheels in the correct direction when the steering wheel is turned, the rack must be flipped upside down.  This means that for use on a LHD Datsun 510, you need to use a RHD MKII Escort rack.

So for the OP's application (RHD Datsun 510), he will need to use a LHD Escort steering rack "flipped".  Luckily, there is awesome aftermarket support for Escorts across the pond, so finding a new rack in the ratio that is desired is pretty simple.

Thanks for the clarification on the type of Escort being discussed. Now I know that 'our' Escort rack is an option I'll look into this a bit more. There is definitely an option to buy a LHD rack here in the UK.

This dude is right!  We make a kit for use with the Ford escort steering rack which is the same width as the MR2 rack but you can get it new for super cheap.

It's the perfect width.   The LCA pivots just need a slight adjustment.  a narrower rack won't fit under most engines.  the steering shaft would hit the block.  Yes you could just narrow the steering shaft but then you loose steering angle which isn't good.

This all sounds like good news....my car is scheduled for resto to start in April, so I'll chat with the workshop. What would be the lead time on a RHD kit for delivery to the UK?

    Thanks,

    JK.

PS I'll message you @Icehouse Thanks.
