ronnny
Does a z24 have the same bolt pattern as the ka24 motor? I believe, I read the z22 and the l18 l20 and such all had different bolt patterns. Thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
All L, Z and KA series engines have the same bolt spacing and pattern. In other words any transmission will physically bolt to any other engine BUT The L series pattern on it's transmission is tilted about 12 degrees to the passenger side of vertical to match the 12 degree tilt positioning of the L series engines. The Z and KA series are about 6? degrees to the driver's side of vertical to match both those engines. Z and KA engines can share transmissions but if an L series transmission were bolted to a Z or KA engine it would have to be rotated about 18 degrees to the driver's side placing the shifter in the driver's hip. Likewise a Z or KA transmission would be rotated to the passenger side and their shifters in the passenger's hip. To get around this the front case of the transmission with the bolt pattern can be swapped to 'convert' it for use on a different engine. Yes, the Z and the KA share the exact same transmission bolt pattern and positioning. Transmissions or engines can be swapped between them. Z and KA transmissions cannot be swapped with L series because of their positioning difference, but they will bolt together Quote Link to comment
ronnny
Thanks for the information. Seems like on the 720 and d21 this is the most common big thing to go wrong with them. Thanks again. Was starting to just look for a wrecked ford or chevy to just swap in the motor and tranny. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The Z or KA are good reliable engines and the later 71C transmission is bullet proof. Hell it was the same 5 speed used on the 300zx non turbo. If there are similar year '88-'93 chevs and fords on the road it's only because there were so many made not because they were better... ugh!
