I think what happened to you was all the Down shifts and all the bumps on the race Track knocked the linkage loose

It doesn't take much to modify it. Just stack up a few washers under each bolt at the bracket under the firewall and give you some added insurance. You can make it cleaner later.

Thanks.  I plan to spend more time on it this winter.  I've basically just thrown the car together to get some enjoyment before the snow comes in a month.
