cheap ways to lower a 280zx

Recommended Posts

How does cutting the spring increast the spring rate? Rate is measured in pounds per inch. With normal coil springs being longer or shorter don't change the rate.

If they are variable rate springs, cutting the soft end will effectively increase the spring rate, but cutting the other end will decrease the spring rate.

Not sure if really increases the rate, but it does make the spring stiffer...I know that doesnt add up mentally....but...lol. Once a certain amount of material is cut off you have altered some space in which the spring was designed to travel...most springs, when compressed or weight is transfered, tend to get stiffer....so if you shorten that space of compression the spring gets stiffer sooner.....hence the bouncing and stiff ride.

Now if you know how tall the spring needs to be, you can simply order a spring with the rate you want and height, from like Speedway.com or Afco, Hypercoil..the list goes on. If your stock rate is 200lbs and you have figured out how tall you want the spring to be, but decide to bump up the rate to 300lbs, your ride will be stiffer, but NOT like a cut coil. The new coil will be much more effective as the weight transfers, simply because the coil length is designed for that weight and compression.

Keep in mind when ordering there are two types of coils that act and perform a tad different...but Im not going to get into that.

I hope this helps.....if it doesnt...sorry about that...lol.
