Adding new fuel pick up tube?

I'm mounting a new fuel tank in the 79 210 wagon. It is a new 81-83 810 tank. The dimensions are nearly identical, I need to modify the mounting tabs and fuel pick up. The sending unit is completely different and I'm going with a universal sending unit. The oe sending unit for the 810 includes the fuel pick up and return, there is no fuel pick up in the new tank. I'm making a plate to fit the nearly 6" sending unit hole and it will have about a 3" smaller hole for the universal sending unit. I need to drill a hole in the plate, for the pick up, how far off the bottom of the tank do I need to place the new pick up?
