its not retracting???

its usually due to binding of the belt itself....if that isnt the casen maybe look at eh housing itself and see if it is deteriorating.

 

i have had cars from the early 60's and the retract mechanism in the seats has almost always been the belt itself hanging up on something

I guess I will have to pull the interior and look. I have to anyway since my passenger door switch is shorted or something and the door light on the dash won't turn off.

Turns out the belt was twisted up in the mechanism, fixed now. On a sidenote when I removed the interior panels by removing the screws in the armrests, I replaced armrests with simple fender washers on the screws to hold the interior panels. visually looks more roomy in the back now.
