white93yota Posted May 10, 2010 Report Share Posted May 10, 2010 do the 1973-1979 datsun 620's have a close-ratio transmission??? my first car witch was a 1977 datsun 620 short bed had a l20b and a 5-spd transmisson.i couldn't do 50mph if i wasn't in 5th gear.can anybody tell me why??? datzenmike Posted May 11, 2010 Report Share Posted May 11, 2010 Must have something wrong with the motor to not let it rev up. You should easily be able to go 50 MPH in 3rd gear. Close ratio is a relative term and only means something when compared to something else. There were two different gear sets for the 620 5 speed. The '77 and '78 had a 3.321 1st gear and the '79 had a 3.592 so I guess you could say that the '77-'78 was a 'close ratio' comparing it to the '79. Quote Link to comment
white93yota Posted May 11, 2010 Author Report Share Posted May 11, 2010 thanks!!! it was my first car.now my dad's friend has it.it has a webber 32/36 carb,lowered and has a cherrybomb glasspack muffler.it's loud as hell!!! it handles like it's on rails weither it's lowered or stock heighth.i had a 1986 vw gti 1.8 liter 8 valve with a close-ratio 5-spd transmission.my datsun was better and it handled better too!!!
