So as I'm gathering up parts and my brother runs up on a 283 chevy it's all there oil pan to air filter. What trans should I be hunting for a 5 speed would be good but a 6 speed would be great. Any suggestions? Thought about doin a automatic with paddle shifts but they are a bit pricey.

5 speed from first gen s-10 with a 4.3L. They are fairly light and cheap. If you want something more heavy duty, fullsize truck or vette. Fullsize truck trannys are strong but not very fast shifting, and heavy.

I second that. The 4.3L S10 tranny were excellent little things, but if you want something stronger look at the Sierra 1500 4.3L Vortec tranny's. They take a hell of a beating and are geared really nice.
