Are you talking about the older GM 10si style alternator that was used from the early seventites to the mid eighties?

 

Yes it can be done, i have one on mine. Just dont fall for the generic GM one wire alternator. They are crap.

 

I will have to look tomorrow at how it is wired, unless you can find a picture of it in my truck thread. I think that it is titled "my yello 620".

Its a super easy upgrade I just did mine. If you have the plug that goes in the top of the chevy alternator the ones the field the other is the sensor wire that comes on when you turn the key. If you need a pic I can take one of mine. I have 510.

Although this is a Chevy engine in my truck. There is this little adapter for it, I think $3 it has a resister that jumps the field windings and allows you to make it a 2 wire install (one to batt and one to key or switch to power the alt).
