  1. thank you for getting back. no real surprise that rails should be straight. pulling it straight should not be to difficult.
  2. thank you for getting back. both frame rails show some damage/buckling at the point just ahead of the subframe mounting point. let me ask the question this way - if i put a straight edge on the inner side (where the engine sits) of the frame rail , beginning at the fire wall, should the frame be straight all the way to the nose?
  3. engine and most everything else is out. working on a 1973. i see the frame is buckled slightly where subframe attaches and from there, frame is skewed to the passenger side. should the frame be straight from the firewall to the nose? any help appreciated.
  4. undertook search here for alternator upgrade on my blue 78 long bed that was simple and fast. found GEARHEAD's advice on using 82-89 subaru that was 60 amp type (up from stock 38amp). i found the change out easy to install and only other part i needed was a slightly larger belt. lights noticeably brighter. recommend this to any and all who want more power for accessories and lights.
  5. update - should have new carb by next week. given i am running stock motor and exhaust, does anyone have recommendations on jetting to up performance even more?
  6. datzenmike have continued to work on rig for last several months. rebuilt/rehabed/repaired/restored or simply replaced - bench seat, tires, body and paint, heater, lights, radiator, starter, alternator, coil, plug wires, shocks, sway bar and a bunch of other stuff. Rig actually looks decent now. up until recently, stock carb was doing fine but now am having problems (wont idle, secondary wont open, runs rough). no question carb is original and assume it has simply worn out. i do not assume i am adept enough to tackle rebuild and would enjoy performance upgrade and as per your suggestion. It is my plan to order a new weber conversion kit (redline). do you have any suggestions (or can you point me to a particular post ) that might help me make the change over go smoothly. many thanks.
  7. king rat - thanks so much for the advice. the detail you provide is particulary useful as regards the trade-offs one must make when undertaking most performance upgrades. I will chose my path based in large part on what you have identified as upgrades to make. I will keep you posted on my progress and again, thanks so much so effort you put into your response. i have learned a lot. ps - wanted to do something today so made up a set of msd wires (8.5mm) i had left over from a couple of other projects. Put them on car and while it probably made little difference with motor, it was fun to do.
  8. king rat - so appreciate your timely and complete response. did serach for ignition upgrades and found very little which now makes sense given the nature of the system. Also understand your comments regarding driving experience and pls know that i am on that path already having replaced the tires and shocks as well as installing a front sway bar and brake system (repair and replace). while i do intend to lower the rig and do those other things to enhance the driving experience, certainly part of this must be tweeking the motor. So i ask you king rat, what is your advice on the one, two or three (cost effective and moderately priced) upgrades i might consider to improve the engine performance (l20). again, thank you for your comments on the ignitiion system.

    ignition upgrade

am new to datsun world and working on recently acquired 1978. rig runs well however want to improve preformance. have removed smog stuff and now am looking at ignition, wondering what can be done there. Is the ignition system worth upgrading (bang for the buck) or does it work well enough that other improvements are a better value? any advice appreciated. thanks.
  10. thanks for discussion on this. if possible, any pics you have or can post would be a great help since I am now in process of doing same.
  11. L god- thanks for suggestion. do you have a source for such a harness? also daniel do you happen to know of someone who sells a kit i could just wire in? many thanks.
  12. thanks for getting back to me. both links were great! On a related note, i believe it is also possible to make the headlights brighter without going to the expense of an H4 conversion. this modification is sometimes referred to as "brite lights". are you familiar with this and do you know how to accomplish this as well.? any help appreciated.
  13. Am new to forum and recent owner of 620 (1978) want to upgrade to H4 lights. in preparation, installed new stock alternator, battery, battery cable, cleaned grounds. also can i eliminate what seems to be odd headlight connection on top of radiator and simply connect wires permanently? brake pedal has odd feel (soft). have check shoes, bled system and no change. could this be brake booster or brake bias mechanism? thanks.
