Description

Listed for sale is an early 1974 (11/73) Datsun 260Z coupe. This car is a running example of a Z which has been a rolling restoration and daily driver through my decade long tenure of the car.

Mileage shows on the odometer as 82,564 miles, though it's more likely to be 182k. This Z is running its original L26 straight-six, fed by a pair of round-top SU style Hitachi carburetors. The ignition has been upgraded to a pointless distributor, making a major improvement to cold starting. The ignition coil was also replaced at the same time. The emissions equipment has mostly been removed, no longer hindering the performance and reliability of the motor. All of this is cooled with a Koyorad aluminium radiator and recently replaced water pump.

On the exhaust side, the car is fitted with an MSA 3-2 Header, feeding into an MSA supplied 2.5" stainless exhaust. The motor was originally mated to a three-speed automatic, but has since been converted to a 5-speed in the Summer of 2019 with an Exedy clutch plate, and resurfaced factory flywheel. The transmission was professionally rebuilt with new synchros when I acquired it, and feels tight and excellent.

Suspension setup is original with a shock upgrade to Tokiko Blues all-around. The suspension bushings front and rear have also been completely replaced with new polyurethane pieces. The brakes are original, and aside from discs and fresh bearings, the braking system is the stock setup. Current wheels are restored 14" factory alloys dressed with 195/70/14 Michelin Defenders.

The major needs for this car are primarily the exterior, needing body work to address scratches, dings, and dents accumulated over the years. The paint is a worn out respray of the original color, which ultimately is worth painting properly. Beyond surface oxidation, the exterior is corrosion free. A respray over the original Leaf Green metallic has faded badly over the years. However, the engine bay and interior retain the original paint in pretty great condition.

The interior of the car has been stripped back, removing tattered trim and a worn out carpet. Although unfitted, the car will be coming with a complete carpet kit, in black, as well as a major set of replacement weather seals. The plastic panels are all accounted for, and will be bundled with the spare parts. The headliner is in great shape. The floor pans will need addressing, as minor perforations have been found. Nothing larger than a coin, but needs tending to sooner than later. I have cleaned the passenger side to bare metal, and have coated the floor with POR-15 for protection. Up front, the dashboard and heating system were pulled in 2019 during the transmission swap (swapping the automatic to manual pedal box). At that time, the non-functioning heater core was professionally restored and the blower motor refurbished. Wiring was carefully cleaned and repaired where needed. OMP seats currently replace the originals, but the originals are included and should just need recovering. Same goes for the steering wheel, in which the decayed foam original has been swapped for a period Momo Prototipo.

Extra parts are plenty, including performance items like an unused Fidanza Flywheel and a front and rear BRE Carbon Fiber spoiler. I also have brochures, documents, invoices, and manuals that will be included. Overall, I've done what I've can on a limited budget to bring this car as close to being a daily-driver classic as I can get. However, a lack of space and funds to fully restore this car have forced me to decide to pass on the stewardship to a new owner who will hopefully provide the next positive chapter in this Z's life.
