ryzart Posted July 31, 2011 Report Share Posted July 31, 2011 Hey guys i pulled up the vinyl that was on the floor of my truck and uncovered this mess. I looked under the truck and i didnt notice it. Guess it was too dark or something because now with the interior gutted it is really easy to see from underneath. I looked under the seat and behind it and the floor looked great so i taught it was fine. So now what do i do ? How would some of you guys go about repairing this ? Initially i wanted to cosmetically clean up the truck, repaint, interior redo, bag it, etc. So in my eyes this was looking like a pretty cheap build for me and all stuff that i can handle. Now this i am not sure i can handle and would need someones expertise to repair this properly which is going to turn into big $$$. I also tore into the truck so much that i dont want to put it back together just to try and get rid of it..which i wouldnt get shit for it anyway. Not sure how long after i am done with the truck i would plan on keeping it for so a cheaper alternative way to fox this might be in the picture. Any opinions ? Silly of me to think a truck that is almost 30 years old and on the east coast has no rust/rot on it !! Please help !!!!! Quote Link to comment
Skib Posted July 31, 2011 Report Share Posted July 31, 2011 generally you just cut the pans out of a car that doesnt have them rotted out, cut yours out, and weld the new ones in. or if there not that bad you can just patch the rotted spots. Quote Link to comment

Skib Posted July 31, 2011 Report Share Posted July 31, 2011 possibly. I personally would stick some 2 by 4's or something between the frame and the cab while I did it. that way its off the frame but its an easy move up/down with the cab. Quote Link to comment

ronnny Posted November 9, 2011 Report Share Posted November 9, 2011 I have had 3 720 trucks and all are bad about this. Bet on any 2x4 truck it has needed or needed ball joints several times. But to what is available you find sheet metal and cut out pieces and weld in new ones. Depends on what tools you have to use to how hard it is. A cheap flux core welder is your best start. A flux core seems to weld better on dirt/rusty/painted metal than one with a bottle. What ever saw you have to cut pieces of metal or a floor pan from another truck. Take the gaurd off a 4 1/2" grinder and put a 5" cutoff wheel on it and it will make easy work to cut out a pan in pieces if you are near an outlet. Personally i have choices of torch, sawzall, cutoff wheels and more. Just start patching a little piece here and there and you will get better as you go. A big piece would not be much harder than a small one if you take your time and try after you do one or two small jobs. Could just sand the rust out weld on a reinforcement or two or more and then bondo the hell out of it. Looking at all the rust on the outside of most of these kind of hinted to the under side being ruff. Good luck just takes time. Quote Link to comment
