spottedog
My daily driver 1980 Datsun 720 valve train has always been noisy for the9 years that I have owned it, and now the noise from the valve cover hasgotten louder! This engine is a "LZ24" Frankenstein engine, W58 L20B head on a Z24 block, valve job done by a (incompetent) machinist 2 years ago.Drove it 13,000 miles since I built it back in 2005. The clattering was so loud under acceleration I pulled the head off and took it to a differentautomotive machinist that let we watch as he inspected the head. We found that the head has been milled 0.064", it has one 0.015" cam tower shimunder each cam tower, the cam tower bearing journals are scored and worn outwell out of spec (with the camshaft in the journals I can move the camshaft upand down enough to hear a "clank" soundThe rocker arms are different brands and different lengths, the rocker arm lashadjusters are also different brands. All the rocker arms show heavy wear. I can set the valve lash to spec then a week later the engine runs like shit so I pull the valve cover and find the lash settings have changed! Usually tighter. WTF?The camshaft is surprisingly good, no flat or scored lobes, measures out OK. I then pulled the block worried about any damage, but the crank rod and main bearingslook great, pistons look new, cylinder walls also look great, had my NEW machinistmeasure everything including crack inspection (it is a Z24) and it's all good. The bottom line is I need a good replacement L20B cylinder head with rockers and camso I can get this 12mpg pig of a truck going so I can get to work without bugging myfriends for a ride.I am not soliciting a sale in this forum, I just want to know where I can get onefrom a rebuilding company somewhere.Autozone, O'Rielys, and Napa SAID they could order a rebuilt, but that turned out tobe bullshit. datsunpartsllc had a pricy head but they sold it the same day I got themoney to buy it!Now I will go to the "wanted" section of the classified adds section of this forum andsee if someone here has a good used one.
