  1. Picked it up as a running motor, i haven't taken the oil pan out did have a some water in the oil but i went ahead and put a new head basket in. And changed the oil. As far as i can tell there hasn't been any leaks
  2. Would low oil viscosity also cause this i just realized i put my golfs oil in without noticing 5w30......
  3. That's where i was leaning towards but wouldn't there still be some oil pressure registering with a bad pump?
  4. **update** engine was running great no noise then the screeching and knock under valve cover came back when i add oil the noise goes away for a few minutes. Went ahead and bought an oil pressure tester and it was reading 0 pressure. Did a compression test to play it safe. All 4 cylinders are reading 140 psi. Any ideas???? Thanks in advance guys!!!
  5. The gear works well. The thread on here says u can't use cranks from other l series engines but all u have to do is grind the sides of the ends a little to fit through the pump. Ended up using one from the old l16
  6. I went ahead and started her after submerging the oil pump and installing it back in. Everything sounds good no knocking or weird noises no smoke. Was holding the valve cover down by hand started to see oil oozing out after a few seconds. Just lucky i guess..... Thanks for the helpin a newbie out guys.
  7. As far as an introduction I am a new owner of a little 73 datsun 620 just put in a used l20 b everything ran fine before the install I was lucky enough to try it before I bought it. I did get a chance to try and prime the oil pump today after work, no such luck unfortunately i didn't see any oil oozing on the cam. As far as the ground gear stoffregen motorsports is correct I made a pump tool out of an old shaft. As far as an oil light im guessing its not working it hasn't come on.
  8. The knocking was towards the back of the valve cover
  9. It was just a few seconds at the most well i guess it will give me a chance to really learn my motor
  10. I forgot to prime the oil pump, long story short heard light knocking and then it seized. Threw some oil in the head engine cranked over im going to be priming tommorow. Did i screw anything up? What do i fill with oil to prime it? So far ive filled filter. I will be filling pump tommorow anything else im using an old shaft with the gear ground down to prime it. Thanks guys for helping a newb out.
  11. Thanks for the quick response. I did see that thread my question though is were specifically do i ground the motor from. Is there a specific place on the block that is preferable to ground it from? Thanks again
  12. I just finished swapping a l20b into my 1973 620. Everything works fine except after turning the truck over the first time my gas pedal got stuck. After doing some research on this site I think I fried the throttle cable. The plastic around it was all melted. All my grounds look good except i dont have one from the engine to the body. Is that whats causing the problem? Where do i put the ground from? I didnt see any loose wires off the engine.
