  1. Anyway, I mean to swap primarily aftermarket parts made for a 510 into my 710, all adjustable so things like track width won't necessarily be an issue. The 710 spindles are the same angle as the 280zx strut yes? Or very similar?
  2. This is an excerpt from a write up I was reading that gave me the idea. Apparently this guy was able to make it work in a 510, which is why I was under the impression some of this may work. Site http://www.datsuns.com/Tech/510/rack-n-pinion/510_rack_conversion.htm The suspension design between a 240Z (which has rack & pinion) and 510 is similar, but with some key detail differences. I decided to look into the possibility of putting the 240Z rack into the 510. Here's what I came up with: Differences: Spindle angle (angle between spindle and strut) are different (figure 1). 510 has forward running T/C rods (figure 2) the 240Z has rearward T/C rods. The 510 has a 50" track, the 240Z has 53" track, the 240Z has 10mm shorter steering knuckles and different bolt spacing. Similarities: The crossmember is basically identical, as are the lower control arms. The 240Z crossmember and lower control arm assembly will bolt on the 510 with no modifications. The two biggest issues here are T/C rods and the spindle angle.
  3. Oooo I want this list to be completed and stickied. I've been contemplating on tons of this stuff as far as interchangeable parts goes. I think interchangeable z car parts should be included. My guess is nearly the entire front suspension and crossmember is shared with the 510 platform. Had some questions about a few things. 710 crossmember- same bolt on and geometry as 510 and 240z? 710 control arms- same as 510? Do 280z arms fit as well? 710 steering knuckles/arms- same as 510? What about 280z and 240z (assuming using r&p) 710 ball joints- same across the board? 710 top hats or camber plates- same as 510? 710 TC rods- same as 510? Idea- 240z crossmember+240z R&p+510 control arms+240zknuckles+240ball joints+280z struts plus+510 camber plates +240 tie rods +510 swaybar= will it work without interference of the TC rods and tie rods?? Or keeping the steering box and 510 crossmember and using the associated 510 pitman arms and knuckles with all the other 280 goodies? No need to dive into how the steering column won't work with the 240z crossmember I'm aware.
  4. Oh, and funny enough, wish push came to shove I ended up being the one to ask for a divorce lol
  5. Still keeping the ball rolling on this, I'd love to strip this down, buy a welder, four link it, drop in a 1ufze and enjoy, but funds are holding me back. He'll even drop in a new cylinder head just to get it to move. Divorce is a done deal. It never was about the cars really, they just didn't help. Wts: ae86 wtb: u67 complete cylinder head...
  6. Still have the datsun folks. Need that cylinder head soon. Selling my ae86 as I need a four door. Selling motorcycle as well. Will lower price on my corolla to cash+ parts to get my datsun going. The ad is on multiple forums including this one.
  7. Yeah cars in town still, out off stockdale. I did live in silver creek for quite a few years, you may have seen my corolla and the datsun putting around that area. Could use a few valvesprings and valvesand possibly the cam, to piece stuff back together, but the trunk rack isn't going anywhere:( it totally helps complete the look.
  8. @510farmer don't live in the valley anymore thank god. I'm in morro bay now, one of bakersfields home away from homes. Left my bike, my ae86 and my datsun back there for a while now. Ended up having to sell my forester xt to free up funds for my split:( good news is I haven't got anyone to tell me what to do anymore, so hopefully I can get some of my rides back in motion. You ever come to the coast? Bring me some l20 valve train! I'd love to just get the datsun road worthy again. Bad headlamp switch, weak brakes, bent valves... It needs some love for sure
  9. @redbanner might take you up on that cylinder head sometime.
  10. Soo. This has been in the dark for a minute. Glad to put it back on my mind. The divorce was inevitable... Still have the car with bent valves rotting on a garage in Bakersfield. I live on the central coast now but I haven't forgotten my babies... Soon....
  11. Sorry guys this was the 2500 pound 12ft long straw that broke the camels back aka my wife. She hates all three of my cars because I'm always working on them, so I'm selling the only practical car I own, putting the Datsun on the back burner and parking it for a bit until the tension cools, and taking my ae86 with me as I am moving to the coast next month. I'm pretty sure the motorcycle as a Father's Day gift, was also a "please get rid of your projects immediately" gift. But, I'm a stubborn bastard and there's no way I'm getting rid of the 710, it just looks too damn awesome. Once things calm down between my wife and I ill swap the cylinder head out, get it going so I can take it over to the coast. Then start on some simple stuff. Sorry guys but I have 4 kids, and a wife who nearly divorced me over my cars(amongst other things). Let me buff my scratches out, then I can start doing work.
  12. Well gents after some tearing apart of things, I've discovered the car to have sticky valves, whether they are just bent or tweaked I don't know. I've been super busy at work and home, and for some reason I'm a little broke right now. It's like destiny or some force is between me and the Datsun. Oh wait, never mind, it just my new motorcycle.
  13. Just a little diagram I made off my phone based off of some quick measurements I took. The upper portion is the leaf spring mounts on the frame of the 710, the lower portion is the gts axle from my corolla. Seems like with custom links the lower links mounts would line up very easily, with the links being symmetrically parallel to each other.
  14. My guess would be a warped head. Had a bad cylinder head on a 4ag, turned out to be something like a crack from cyl 3 to the coolant channel. If you take the head off I would inspect it for a hairline fracture between the two cylinders. Also most machine shops only charge 100$ bucks to resurface a head and inspect it for warpage and check valve seals.
  15. Cleaned up the valve cover while I was at it. Came out pretty well if I might say
