RoadRace Posted September 8 Report Posted September 8 (edited) Turns out the rear brake hard line on the lower control arm on the 510 has been rubbing metal on metal since 72 and it decided to crack. our cars are not getting younger - this is just a reminder to look at things where metal on metal contact happens Edited September 8 by RoadRace add text Quote
iceman510 Posted September 8 Report Posted September 8 Redoing my rear brake lines is something I intend before next season. Whoever put mine together left off all the clips at the transition points to the flexible lines, so just the shape of the hard lines is locating them. I just recently finished all new lines on the street '73 I'm restoring, so I have practice. 😁 1 Quote
RoadRace Posted September 9 Author Report Posted September 9 I'm not the best tube bending guy - i really can appreciate a well bent hard line 🙂 Right now i have the braided lines in all the factory locations, i was talking to another 510 racer and he had a good idea and i might make a winter project of it and replace the rear hard lines i just bent, and make them braided flex lines. Russell sells the adapters and ready-made lines in various lengths, you'd just need to measure what you need. it would make it a lot easier to change the rear cylinders with #3 braided flex lines...plus i wouldn't have to look at the hard lines i made lol https://www.russellperformance.com/3an-to-10mm-x-1-0-male-brake-adapter-fitting-with-inverted-flare-pair-641431.html https://www.russellperformance.com/shop/brake-clutch/competition-brake-hose-assemblies.html?_=1787834987143&fitting_size=16030 Quote
iceman510 Posted September 9 Report Posted September 9 I can see that working and being ok on the rear control arms as that run is not that long. I'm not a fan of replacing hard lines with flexible where not needed. Actually you would reduce the number of joints from the rear distribution block. Quote

Braided at the arms feels like a decent compromise, but keeping the long runs hard line avoids turning the whole rear into a hose collection. Quote
datzenmike Posted September 21 Report Posted September 21 Flex lines are reinforced hose and will expand under braking pressures making the pedal spongy compared to hard lines. Keep their use to a bare minimum. Quote

Braided on the arms seems like a decent compromise, but I'd still keep the long chassis runs hard line. Fewer fittings is always one less place for brake fluid to escape at the worst time. Quote
