I trying to improve lighting    however  how will it look in the sun    also switching to 8w back lighting bulbs

I switched to Amazon LED bulbs on my 710 Datsun, much brighter at night. You can actually read the odometer now.

My 85 has new Nissan bulbs and is lit up real good.

How hard is it to change out the bulbs?

 Remove the gauge cluster and start swapping them. I would only change the illumination bulbs, definitely don't change the red charge lamp.
