JoeVR Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 I have a 1982 Datsun 720 that needs a new engine. What other Nissan or Datsun engines can be a direct bolt in - or at least with minimal modifications? I think it might be cheaper to find a running engine somewhere and drop it in instead of rebuilding my current one. It looks like the Z motor mounts are all the same. Could I use a newer Z motor, remove the fuel injection, and put my carb and intake on? Any motors that I should stay away from - or engines/years that I should look for specifically? I currently have a 1982 Datsun gas extended cab, 4x4, 5spd. Thanks! Quote
NC85ST Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 The easiest swap would be a z24. I believe that they started using those starting in ‘83. You can use the z24i but there some things that have to be changed in order to stick with the carburetor. I’m not sure of what all needs to be changed aside from the carburetor and intake. datzenmike Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 If you want 'drop in' do not try to fit any other engine. Yes a Z24(S) carburetor engine is as drop in as it comes. You have all the parts needed on your old Z24 to convert a Z24i to carburetor. They are... 1/ the distributor 2/ the oil pump/distributor drive spindle 3/ intake and carburetor. The '81-'82 Z22 from a truck should drop in. The Z20E from an '80-'81 or Z22E from an '82-'83 S110 200sx engine should work if you change the same 3 items as converting a Z24i. The Z20(S) '82 A10 (HL510) is an 8 spark plug engine and should literally drop in. I would avoid the '83-'86 720 Z20(S) engine as it is high compression and has a knock sensor but your truck won't have the wiring and electronics to support it and it will ping like crazy. In All Cases automatic or manual, you can swap your Z24 flywheel and clutch assembly onto the donor engine. This will avoid any problems with miss matching the release bearing collar. If you have an automatic you will need to remove the clip on torque converter pilot from the end of the crankshaft and pop a new pilot bushing into the end of the crankshaft. Pilot converter... This is me removing a pilot bushing, but you get the idea. They are soft so use a block of wood to protect it when you hammer it in. Quote

My reply was for JoeVR. Not familiar with KSA but aware L series were used in the 720, probably points ignition and no emissions controls and double cabs were common. Quote

JoeVR Posted September 2 Author Report Posted September 2 Thanks, guys, for all this help. And I loved the side track to the crew cab - I'd never seen that one before. I am trying to figure out right now if I really need a new engine, or if the previous owner (who claimed he had just re-done the timing chain) was only a few teeth off.
