frankendat Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 There is a 1981 Datsun 720 that runs, but the clutch is out, for $600. If you adjust for inflation, then that is what I paid for my first Datsun, 1978 620, that needed a clutch and a starter. I am going to take that as a good sign. The 81 has been for sale for weeks, which isn't good, but I will ignore that and still take it as a good sign. Note: Mine might not have needed a clutch so soon, if I would have purchased a starter. I drove it for a long time, backing into parking spaces and a push and a pop to get her running. 1 Quote

datzenmike Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 The Z22 isn't known for blowing the HG but the Z24 is. Anything is possible though. Does not run.... means you can't evaluate the following... Do the brakes work? Can it stop? Does it pull to one side? Does the transmission shift properly, all the gears there? Does the driveshaft vibrate, U joints OK? Does the differential make any noise? Can it make highway speed? Does it vibrate? Do the tires vibrate, are they balanced? Are the shocks worn out? Any weird noises? Quote

Any weird noises? The ad shows it running and blowing white smoke when the gas is hit hard. (Also, like the one I purchased over 25 years back) People (Including me) are freaked about rising prices, and it is true somethings are rising. But, the younger generation are by in large soft. I worked fast food and detailing cars when I bought that Datsun and lived in a house with 4 (sometimes 5) other guys. The furniture was donated the entertainment center and stereo racks were made of cinder blocks and partical board that had been liberated from a construction site. The Dastun was the first clutch I replaced without assistance from an older wiser person. I pulled two wheels up on the curb and did it in the street. it worked just fine, same as the starter I replaced and I rebuilt the carb, put new bushings in the steering and other stuff I am sure I am forgetting. To me that ad was a reminder, that if you want it, you can make it in America. Maybe not Idaho, or the West, which is a change, because the mantra was always "go West young man and make your fortune." Unfortunately or fortunately, that ship has sailed. But, opportunity can be found in the flat States. I want to get the word out, because right now the option for getting ahead that is being presented is taking it from me.(primarily from the Democrats, but the Republicans aren't helping, by cutting other options and pushing more people into the taking from older camp). The option that will not end well for anyone. We had massive parties, spent paychecks on stereo's, beer and women and got along just fine. All I hear on the news is how rough kids have it today, things are so expensive, but again they are just soft. Quote
datzenmike Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 White 'smoke' could be steam from a blown HG. In rare cases if the oil burning is severe like 100 miles to the quart it comes out white. That probably is a holed or broken piston. Quote
