Veraciousreasoning Posted June 14 Report Posted June 14 Long time boys. Well I sold my 1980 720 for a 82. I know the Weber 32/36 works for it as well. Wondering if there is any modification I gotta do or can I install it in a day without having to do crazy stuff. Quote
Thomas Perkins Posted June 14 Report Posted June 14 do a 80 and 82 datsun use the same weber 3236 +6 Yes, a 1980 and a 1982 Datsun (such as the 720 pickup) generally use the exact same Weber 32/36 DGV/DGEV carburetor. Both years feature Datsun's 'L' series or 'Z' series engines, which share the same intake manifold bolt pattern and throttle linkage style. While the physical carburetor is universal, differences arise in how it mounts or connects to your specific engine setup:Engine Variants: The 1980 Datsun 720 typically features the L20B engine, while early 1982 models might have the Z20 or Z22 engines. The core Weber 32/36 body will fit all of these, but you will need the correct vehicle-specific adapter plate for your manifold.Choke Type: You can get the Weber 32/36 with a manual (DGV), water (DGAV), or electric (DGEV) choke. Both an 80 and 82 Datsun can use any of these, though electric chokes are usually the easiest aftermarket swap.Linkage & Jets: The carburetor you purchase may need minor calibration (jetting) depending on whether your truck is manual or automatic and if your motor has been modified.Air Cleaner: You can buy complete conversion kits that include an air filter adapter to reuse your stock Datsun air cleaner housing, or you can use a round Weber aftermarket filter. If you are replacing a worn-out stock Hitachi carburetor, consider grabbing a complete Redline Weber Conversion Kit so you get the exact adapter plates, gaskets, and throttle brackets specific to your Datsun chassis. If you want, tell me:What is your exact engine size (e.g., L20, Z20, or Z24)? It's the z24 I think and I already have the redline kit from my previous truck. I know on the 1980 I had to alter the throttle cable and a bunch of other stuff to get it to work. Just wondering if I have to do the same kind of alterations to this one. Quote

The '80 720 had an L20B, the last year they were used. The '81 and '82 were a Z22 gas engine, there were no optional Z20 engines till the middle of the '83 model year. The Weber doesn't care if manual or automatic. Any fine tweaking of jets would be altitude dependent. The higher you go the more over rich the engine runs. Quote
SamL Posted June 14 Report Posted June 14 Did the 720 ever had the carburetor mounted on the driver's side? In which case, it would use DFEV or DFAV. Quote
datzenmike Posted June 14 Report Posted June 14 First year 720 was the last year for the L20B engine. The carburetor on the L series is on the left above the exhaust manifold. Quote
Veraciousreasoning Posted June 14 Author Report Posted June 14 It seems to be on a similar spot and yes it's the z22 and a 4 speed manual Quote
Veraciousreasoning Posted July 8 Author Report Posted July 8 bumping for help cause I live in Idaho and the hills are so annoying when your truck drops down to 40 mph Quote
datzenmike Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 Well that may be the capability of the Z22 against the grade of the hill. 720 4x4s are not light. Stock 4x4 tires are just under 28" diameter. If you replaced with 31s this would take away some of your gearing. Quote
