Smoking Joe
I think I have a 71b trans. 1985 King Cab z24 engine 5 speed I have read somewhere in the forums about changing the counter shaft bearing due to noisy transmissions. while driving my truck the trans seems very quite and shifts like a dream. I currently have the trans out of the truck would it be wise to go ahead and change the problem bearing or is it rare that these bearings give problems Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Look near the reverse light switch it may say LZ71B or Z71B. Front counter bearing growl is in all gears but 4th if the bearing is bad. I believe that if something isn't broken don't fix it. The 720 only came with automatic or 71B 4 or 5 speeds. I was always taught that the style of shifter determined if A B or C. Some parts shops call the later 71B a 71C but I say it isn't. Prior to '86.5 when the 720 ended only the '84 300zx non turbo had the 71C transmission. The S12 switched to 71C in '86.5 and the brand new '86.5 D21 Hardbody was the first truck to have the 71C. S shifter (external) B shifter C shifter. Quote Link to comment
Smoking Joe
Okay thanks based I. The shifter style mine is definantly a B Style. And mine was quite as Quite as a mouse so ill leave it alone. Thanks again for your knowledge and advice Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Every gear except 4th but also including reverse, directs power through the counter gear. Heavy loads will exert a strong side force trying to pry the main and counter shafts apart. Going to 62mm from 56mm bearing makes it a better year transmission. The 62mm counter bearing was continued into the 71C Quote Link to comment
