Tiger Ader
bought a "new" $300 starter from Napa. Cranks and starts the truck well. Im not sure if this is a bad starter teeth contact. But it sounds a little off but I could've sworn my first starter sounded the same I'm not sure. Need 720 vets on this one. Also the solenoid is close to the engine block as to when I had the oem starter, the solenoid was closer to the trans dipstick. Whoever responds to this and curious about the starter sound, lmk I can send you a vid of it. Thanks all! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Close to dealer price but you are paying for reliability. Possibly you had then, or now have, the optional gear reduction starter. They do indeed sound much different than the stock direct drive starter. Gear reduction starters, to me, have a sort of chirp-chirp-chirp sound. Direct drive spin the engine a little faster and sound like a typical starter. Ignore the length. Look at the bottom end casting and how the solenoid and gear on the end appear. Direct drive on left and gear reduction on the right. As long as it spins the engine every time the key is turned and there is no clashing of gears or nothing but a loud click. Quote Link to comment

Old Chrysler starters coma to mind, chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp, could ID them by their starter sound. Quote Link to comment

My 340 Dart was a gear reduction. Back on '70's TV shows they always used a Chrysler starter sound when cars started. I think The Rockford Files was the exception. 1 Quote Link to comment
