720 carb issues

Recommended Posts

Recently acquired a 1984 720 z24. The carb that came on it was trashed by the last guy. Pieces missing, duct tape over vacuum lines etc.. so instead of tracking down a rebuild kit and hoping it had everything I needed, I bought a new carb. New carb installed and surprisingly it started with no adjustments. But it’s idling super super high. There’s limited info on these carbs, the screws I’m turning I think are the idle screw and mixture screw. But all the way in, all the way out. No change in idle, runs near redline the entire time. Checked the vacuum lines that come out of the intake manifold and they’re either capped or connected. No change. I’m at a loss here as I just started getting into carbureted automobiles so I’m alittle clueless lol. Any help appreciated.

First the idle must be low enough for an idle adjustment to have any effect. You are probably well above that.

There should be an idle speed adjustment screw near the throttle cable connection. Turn that back out to reduce the idle,

Post some pictures of your carburetor you bought.

So, I feel silly. NC85ST hit the nail on the head. The throttle cable wasn’t adjusted correctly. Purrs like a kitten. Has a slight misfire still. The wacko before me has no set screws in the distributor so I think ignition timing is off. Probably going to do plugs wires and maybe a new distributor depending on what I find when I get the cap off. Thank you guys so much!
