Brass plugs in Crankshaft

Recommended Posts

IMG_7412.thumb.jpeg.562ee219d8de7d3a546cbd1ea38b1342.jpegUpon disassembling my Z24 engine I discovered there are 2 brass plugs that apparently plug cross drilled oil galleys in the crankshaft These plugs are pressed into the #1 and #4 outside section of the rod journals.  My problem is that the plug in the #1 rod journal appears to be coming out, when compared to the brass plug in the #4 rod journal.  Has anyone had an issue with this. I feel like I should do more than just try to hammer press it back in. Id estimate it is protruding out about .125 thousands,  whereas the #4 is flush with the crank surface.  I wish I could post a picture but so far, I haven't been able to figure out how to do so.

Has anybody ever seen this before as I originally stayed in the topic. The picture is of the number 1 rod journal. The brass plug in the number 4 rod journal is pressed down flush with the crankshaft as pictured in this message IMG_7415.thumb.jpeg.78c346f75addb972dc9f3e5cdcec97a9.jpeg

Never seen one back out. But when it’s serviced by a machine shop they drill them

out, clean the oil passages and then reinstall new ones.

Maybe it was previously 'rebuilt' and poorly replaced. If it falls out the oil pressure will drop drastically that rod bearing is not long for this world.

I would assume just tap it back in then center punch to spread the soft brass to hold it?

This was my solution to the aluminum plugs in the crankshaft cross bore holes. I machined some steel plugs hammer pressed them in and then fuse welded them with my Tig welder to prevent ever being a problem.

Aluminum to Steel. I had professional engine builder Gene Fulton check the balance and he said it appeared to be better than it originally was.  As he said these engines are far from finely balanced when leaving the factory.
