mtngoat
Hey folks. I've got a line on a 84 4x4 pickup and I'm wondering if I should take advantage of it. The deathmobile needs a 5 speed, and i prefer the truck ratios. If parts are still available I could redo the transmission. It appears to have the z24 block (I'm not up on non L series engines), and it has all the 4x4 drivetrain still in place. I've been eyeballing this thing in the back of a truck repair yard next to an offramp in The Dalles every time I use that ramp. It's been sitting there for years, no wheels, sitting on the ground on the brake drums/disks. Yesterday I had some spare time and decided to go take a look. I asked the yard owner what was up with it, he said he was planning on sending it to the crusher. The glass is intact, and the interior is surprisingly un nasty despite it's storage conditions. In fact, the seats are danged near perfect. When I went in I was considering asking if I could simply buy the transmixer. However, if he's going to scrap it I'm thinking I may just offer him a price related to it's scrap value, less some for him not having to deal with it and simply having it vanish. Then I could mine it for parts at my leisure. Heck, my l20b is kinda tired anyway...maybe a swap? I do know about the differing tilt of the block and those issues....but an entire 84 for a scrap price is kind of enticing, and I do have room for it. Thoughts? I've included the first part of the VIN, I'll have to do some decoding work to determine the year which I am uncertain of. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Nothing on it will fit the 510 goon. Well with the correct adapter that Weber would If you swap the engine and transmission you don't have to worry about the engine tilt. I put a Z24 in my '78 620. However that truck is there for a reason, something is broken. Probably the engine as they are known for blowing head gaskets and the owner said keep it when he got the estimate. If a head gasket is shot it's very possible coolant has rusted out the cylinder. The transmission may be broken. You can't tell if you can't drive it. It's probably full of surprises. Dguy210
You can fit a z and 5 speed in a 510...it's not that difficult. You only need to flip the crossmember and cut out the hood prop and swap around a bit of wiring and upgrade the radiator and change the oil pan and pickup to fit the flipped crossmember and relocate the dipstick (or custom oilpan). Then fix the headgasket in the Z24 and deck the block so it doesn't happen again. Also 4x4 so no speedo. Here's the thread where I cram a Z22 and 5spd from a 720 into a 510. https://ratsun.net/topic/82673-a-certain-blue-510/ Edited April 24 by Dguy210 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Lot of work. I would get the 720 running first so you know about the engine. The Z24 is known for blowing head gaskets every 100K and it's not just the block or head flatness. The gaskets compress and often delaminate over many many heat cycles so re-torquing the head bolts once a year keeps them properly clamped. It does not happen on the earlier Z22 blocks so there is something different in the Z24 itself. For so much work to swap a Z24 into a 510 perhaps a full rebuild would be the way to go and hope the 5 speed is alright. Depending on the 720 some 5 speeds are the same length as the 510's 4 speed so with luck no driveshaft shortening. I would drain the oil and inspect it for metal. BTW the picture of the box, grill and hood make it post '84, and the G in the VIN definitely makes it an '86 Quote Link to comment
fiveoneO
The carb is probably worth as much as you'd get for scrap metal, if its a real Weber. If the block is in good shape you could build a pretty torquey LZ engine, though it might be a little tall for the 510 engine bay. Rumor is that T3 uses the leaf springs off that truck for their conversion kit on the wagons. They do make a new front mount because those springs are a little longer than stock and I'm betting they use the 2wd spring, the 4wd springs look pretty beefy. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
All 520/521/620 and 720 main leaf springs are 1,200mm eyelet to eyelet center lines. You would have to measure the 510 spring but I don't see why they would be different, but? The 4x4 springs are flatter but much stiffer than the 2wd. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
What could I snag from a 84(?) 4x4 pickup which is useful for a 510 wagon? the gas in the tank the weber carb that blue roadster looks like Tana's before she sold it. Edited April 24 by banzai510(hainz) Quote Link to comment
iceman510
The front diff won't fit your wagon, but it fits a sedan 510. 3 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There's a guy on here with a 4.625 truck differential in his 510. I also got a 4.11 truck 4x4 differential for someone on the Realm. Just how far does a 720 travel in 4x4 in it's lifetime? Probably less than a hundred miles? One of the early long bed 4x4s had the 4.625. The 4.11 was after '82 in the Delux model. Probably the optional rim and tire. Quote Link to comment
