I am hoping to catch this when it comes east this year on its way to Philadelphia.  It's tough for locomotives that large to traverse the tracks east of Chicago.

I grew up with steam locomotives and have heard of the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. Locomotives were almost completely gone by 1960.

If you can watch it being serviced (which they do ever 50-100 miles), it is worth it.  Then, it will pull out and that is worth seeing.

 

Roads that parallel the tracks are neat.

 

My stuff was to big to load.   We followed it from Rawlins to Rock Springs.

Notice the flags on the front of the train in NV....they aren't flowing back.
