Borg Warner 35 without a kickdown cable?

Recommended Posts

I'm new here and new to Datsuns. Well, I did own an 85 720 back in high school. I've been working on swapping an L16 and auto trans from what I was told an early 70's 510, into my wife's 1955 Hudson Metropolitan. Every time I've googled something about this drivetrain, I usually get directed to this site, so I've already learned so much from reading through threads on here. I've hit a snag that I need some help with now. I just about have the car back on the road. I took it for a test drive yesterday and the trans won't shift out of 1st gear. From what I've been able to research, I have the Borg Warner 35, but mine doesn't have a kickdown cable. I just has a vacuum modulator on the back, the four wire switch on the side, and then there is a single wire plug on the front DS corner that I'm not sure what it is. Can anyone help me identify exactly what trans I have, so I can figure out if the trans is bad or if I just don't 2v2ZDriqrxf55Sd.jpg2v2ZDriyqxf55Sd.jpg2v2ZDrid8xf55Sd.jpghave something hooked up that needs to be. Thanks! 2v2ZDriG5xf55Sd.jpg

Well if the transmission thinks that the shift lever is in L it will stay in first. Is it in D(rive)? What happens if you select 2 and drive off?

Make sure the vacuum hose to modulator is not leaking. Low vacuum is perceived as heavy throttle, delaying the up shift.

Kick down solenoid is stuck?

ATF bright red????

There were at least three automatic transmissions in the 510. Two were Borg Warner. The Letch Worth was a British made one with the kick down cable. The later Muncie I believe had an electric solenoid on the front left side.

Can't see it as the 'engine stand' is in the way. Can you post a better picture of the front left about where the two exhaust become a single pipe??

The third automatic is an in house made JATCO (japan automatic transmission company) unit somewhat built around the Borg Warner but much improved. Over the years improvements to the 3N71B made it capable of handling the later 280zx turbo. Most are 31.5" long but the one in the 510 was 26" long, same as the BW35s. The electric kick down switch is under the gas pedal, probably as used in the later Muncie made Borg Warner.

Trans fluid looks good. I'll double check the vacuum line for leaks/plugs. So I guess that single wire plug is a kickdown solenoid, instead of a cable? I guess I need to look into a pedal switch and wire that up.

I believe that is the kick down solenoid. It should go to a switch under the gas pedal powered from the fuse box. I'm more familiar with the 3N71B autos. As it's disconnected, it shouldn't be in kick down mode. If not one of my earlier suggestions then very likely the problem is internal.
