let me know if you do start parting with your stock. I’m starting a foster home for Datsun engines.

I been sayin that to hainz for a little while now he still ain’t sold anything!

But may the lord bless you for hoarding some Datsun stuff, it wont pay dividends in cash money but certainly will in eternal admiration and lowball offers from fellow handsome enthusiasts! Hallelujah!

There it is!

There is another difference between my l16 block and my l18 block also. My l16 has no freeze plug at the front of the block. Not sure if this applies to all l16 or not but I’m sure someone will.

People call them 'freeze plugs' but they are really 'core plugs' a way to remove the sand mould inside that forms the voids for the cooling system.

Yes I’m certainly doing the lord’s work.  Only I turn water into race gas.

About the same.

Incidentally, if you end up with a spare L18 crank, I might be interested.  Especially if you stumble across a six-bolt version.

You got it.

I have a lead on a some parts way out in the boonies.

I’ll keep you posted.

Just about finished prep today, pulled the lines right after this photo to finish scuffing and grinding. Just waiting for things to warm up now.

Still want to jump in there one more time with the engine out and finally get at the rest of the joints I haven’t replaced/refurbished yet.

Not going back to metal everywhere, just  the spots compromised by 50 years of battery-acid or brake-fluid.

Only two components remain. The fuse box is rust-welded to the body. And does anyone want to tell me what the trick is for getting the wiper motor assembly off?

I tried shouting at it and now I’m out of ideas.

Do you mean taking off the little clip? I think you just place a screwdriver between it and the end of the shaft then slide it sideways, I think. If you haven't already, clean out the center cowl drain with a thin flexible thing, maybe a bicycle spoke will work to pull the debris out. For rusted bolts I douse in penetrating oil several times over days or weeks and if they still don't come I bust then off then drill the center with ever larger bits till I can pry the remaining shards out of the threads with an awl, and chase the threads with a tap.

Thanks I couldn’t figure out the clip situation (or didn’t try very hard). I’ll look at it when I get back in there.

I didn’t even know there was a cowl drain. Thanks again! I’ll give that a spray. Is that the only drain for the cowl or just one of?

There are also two downspouts that exit behind the front tires, one on either side behind the dash as well as the central one.
