Vacuum advance has disappeared, not sure that is a good idea. Probably better to just leave everything alone than to pull stuff off and degrade performance and never know it. After a bit of reading and poking around at my carb, I agree. I found some resources from the old internet I’m going to poke around in and see if I can learn what all the hoses and the little pump does. 15 hours ago, datzenmike said: Here's one with the home made covers on. If that was it running in the vid it sounds fine to me. Too loud. I put a quiet turbo AP brand muffler on there. SUs are great when they run right. Mikuni side drafts better I will pull the hood for reinstall. 100% That video was a while back. Check my logic but I think what happened is the fuel pump leaked into the oil. It also fits the gradual increase of the blue smoke on first start, and that it slowly just started running like shit. I love my DIY side exit but the neighborhood seems to agree with you. I’ll fab something more appropriate at some point. Quote Link to comment
ScaryPony
So last night I took a little time to start cleaning the SU. I did some reading also and just thought I would share. Someone can correct me but I believe the small pump-like thing in my hand is a fuel shutoff? Haven’t quite figured out how fuel flows through this setup. Ztherapy does have parts and even recommended a needle size for this application. Now I know I can replace I will disassemble and report more. Quote Link to comment

ScaryPony
Made good progress this weekend. Looks like a good rebuildable L16. Little bluing on cheeks but pretty sure it’s normal. Even checked side-play before pulling the pistons and it’s within range. Rotating surfaces all looked good at first inspection. In other news. Got a line on both L18 and L20 blocks/cranks. Going to rebuild this motor still but don’t (yet) know what will go back in the wagon. Seems like the path is to refresh the W53, get the block paired to a set of flat tops, get it on the road. Then I can build a “real” motor as I have time. You guys have been great for bouncing ideas. Tell me what you think. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Blue is from high heat, (550-600F) usually a spun rod bearing, rod would be really blue but replaced. I would check the journal diameter it may have been turned and an over size bearing used. Better check them all. The stock rod journal diameter for an L16 is 1.9670 to 1.9675 If 1.947 it's turned down 0.5mm Look at the old bearing shells it will say if over size. Quote Link to comment
ScaryPony
Seems right on your numbers unless I’m reading my micrometer wrong Also, the original Nissan markings are there on the rod. Could the blueing be part of a heat treating process in the original MFG? Quote Link to comment

ScaryPony
My daily was briefly a 3-motor. Well, 2.5 maybe. L18 block ready for refresh. Bought from a guy down in Seattle who has been racing Datsuns for decades. Thanks dude. 1 Quote Link to comment

Exiting vertically is what L20Bs do. 2/ it has a '79-'83 thermostat cover but could have been swapped. 3/ Has the later L20B 'fuel rail' between pump and carburetor. Again could have been swapped. Check the block ID behind the dip stick handle. There it is! There is another difference between my l16 block and my l18 block also. My l16 has no freeze plug at the front of the block. Not sure if this applies to all l16 or not but I’m sure someone will. Quote Link to comment

All cheeks are blued. What’s the word on the oil pressure relief valve? Replacement part? Leave it alone? I heard from a reputable source that often race guys plugged it, not sure if that makes sense in a road car? Both motors are stripped now. Pressure washed, dried. Picked up an l18 crank over the weekend. Rods and flat tops coming soon. Once those are here, over to the machinist. also I gave the engine bay some love. Needs more before the motor goes back in but it’s a start. Will take closer look at bearing surfaces but fit was still tiiiight. Spun free. Didn’t notice any immediate major wear or grooving.
