Foxmoto
Good evening all I have a couple questions regarding my 1978 datsun 510 that has a l20b in it. The fuel pump was spraying fuel out of the housing I ordered a fuel pump off zcardepot and partsgeek and both for the 620 with a l20b mechanical style. I saw people online saying that it should work however both of them do not. For whatever reason neither pull in fuel, it has a new fuel filter and the lines are not clogged. I put on the original one to see if something else is wrong beside the pump but it starts right up. Not sure if im doing something wrong on the install or what but both of the new fuel pumps make a squeaking noise which I thought was odd. If anybody could give me any advice I would appreciate it. Also to add I would really like to keep using a mechanical fuel pump but if it comes down to it I im open to go electrical. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Unless they are actual Hitachi or Nikki pumps then the after market ones are at fault. Take the cover off that is leaking and make a gasket for it. Trace the old one and cut out from a sheet of gasket material using a dollar store hole punch and scissors. It's a Datsun not rocket science. https://www.ebay.com/itm/163383188373? Quote Link to comment

With the Nikki I noticed it says its for the l16 but I've seen people say the fuel pumps do not vary except for the inlets. Thanks for the help been a little frustrating trying to figure this out lol Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Then it's not and never was a stock Datsun pump. I have no faith in after market parts. The L series pumps are interchangeable. The inlet/outlet positions can be changed by removing the lower set of screws and 'clocking' their position. Quote Link to comment
iceman510
Do you have the spacer on the pump when attached to the cylinder head? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
That is important or the pump arm does not fit onto the eccentric properly. It will work but will wear the eccentric and/or the arm. Might be even worse on an after market pump. The spacer is about 1/4" thick and a phenolic plastic with exceptional heat resistance to isolate the pump from the hot head. Quote Link to comment

Yes I do, I have a gasket spacer gasket then the fuel pump. I ordered the fuel pump that datzenmike recommended. Thank you again for all the help still pretty new to datsuns so lots to learn lol Quote Link to comment
