Leaky transmission tail /yoke section

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

i'm wondering if others have experienced this issue.  I have a slow leak that appears to be coming from the end of the yoke near the U joint.  The  oil seal at the tail of the transmission is new and the yoke has been been re-sleaved.  this because i had the transmission replaced   last fall.  i have been taking to the shop that helped with the repairs.  unfirtunately they are 1000s of miles away so i cant just bring it back.  from what the shop explained is that the end of the yoke at the u joint that ties into the drive shaft, there is a steel plug which is pinned into the back of the yoke.  wondering if this is a common occurance?  have tried to seal it with JB weld, but not easy to get in there.  any help would be appreciated as always.  thanks.  FYI   if someone could explain how to upload photos to the chats that would be great.  have not figured that one out yet.

I replaced the the rear trans output seal on my 521 twice. Find the Japan made twin lip version and see if that helps . I had a SKF version and was only 1 lip. I pit a 2 lip in there but still leaks all over and now the front leaks. The 521 has carrier bear 2 pc drive line and is a mofo to change(cross member and brace or what ever. so I just add oil and park in the gravel I gave up.

Get a good used one from a wrecking yard.

Pretty sure the spline and yoke are cast as one piece and machined.

My replacement seal was thinner than the original Nissan one. There's a good reason for this. The new one seats deeper into the tail and when the spline is inserted it runs on a fresh never used surface.

Did you put grease on the seal lips or grease the spline before inserting it so it doesn't start up dry?

The surface should be like a mirror. Give the spline a good polish .....

To finish,  I would also rub some Brasso metal polish paste on and using only a strip of cloth do the same thing.

yes the seal was installed properly.  i was thinking of a wrecking yard also, but might be hard to find.  does anyone have the actual part number for the yoke?  the reason i'm thinking of new is that i have too much effort involved in sourcing my transmission.  so i dont want to create a problem with it with a bad yoke.

If it was me, i would first double-check the gear oil level of the transmission. Park on a level surface, and remove the level plug (about 1/2 up the gearbox). If any oil drains out, it is overfilled

If the yoke has been sleeved, you are unlikely to need a new yoke. Perhaps the new seal is faulty, or more likely is a minimal quality seal that is unable to stretch over the sleeve

new users are unable to post photo until 28 posts, I think it is. You can instead post a photo to imgur.com and put the photo URL in your post. When you put a photo on imgur it will ask you to sign up, but no account is actually required

To re-seal the welch plug on the yoke, you can disassemble the U-joint, tap the plug out and fit a new one. see video

But that is the hardest thing to try, so I would check the other things first
