nissan_nerd
Hey Ratsun! I need your guys advice! I just recently finished my 78 810's RB20de swap and have been enjoying it so far! I plan on taking it drifting very soon, and decided it was necessary to hook up the power steering based on my friend's negative experience drifting with a manual steering 510. The 810 use the same (I'm assuming since they look identical) steering box as 79-81 power steering equipped 280ZXs, but with the pitman arm flipped around. I used a BMW E90 reservoir and a 6AN high pressure hose for a s13 240sx to make it all work. However, when I turn the wheel right it feels perfect! But... when I turn it left? Little to no assist at all! I bled all the air out of the system by turning the wheel lock to lock 50 times, and even opened the bleed valve on the box. No luck... Also when I turn the wheel to the left I can hear a squealing noise coming from the box itself. This noise does not occur when turning right, and is not coming from the pump. What is going on!? Is my steering box shot? Let me know your opinions! Constructive criticism welcome. Thank you! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The boxes are identical, both pitman arms are the same part number and both face the front with the steering behind the wheels so where does the flipping around happen? Does the pump make noise when forcing the steering wheel to the left. Like it's working against resistance? This is the '79 280zx I put in my 620. I had to 180 the pitman arm because the steering is in front of the wheels. If there's a problem it will be in the left hydraulic pump section with the two hose connections and the steering column connection. A similar unit is used in the 720. The trouble diagnosis for "Steering effort not the same in both directions" is: Oil leaking in steering gear. Almost certainly a leaking internal O ring. Quote Link to comment

Yeah... looks like I will be in the market for a new box! Thanks for the response! And yes, the box only makes noise when turning left and I can feel resistance at time. Also what I meant by flipped was turning it 180 like you said since the 810's are front sump. Sorry If I was not clear! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Maybe it's me? The 280zx and the 810 pitman arms are both facing forward and don't need to be flipped. As both use the same pitman arm you could probably swap them without any changes. Quote Link to comment
