Rewiring a 10 pin two connector turn signal switch

Recommended Posts

I think my odds are finding this 10 pin connector are pretty low. Does anyone have any experience rewiring a more common 9-pin to do the trick? I did just post an ad on the classifieds, hoping I get lucky. I haven't looked at a wiring diagram yet but the nine pin is missing a whole plug ... Sounds out of my comfort zone.IMG_20250403_191523.jpg.4034dccca02e2ccb

The '73-'74 were 8 pin, the '75-'77 were 7 pin, the '78 was 10 pin and the '79 were 10 pin plus a two pin plug for the 'flash to pass' high beam switch.

My head hurts thinking about it. You might get a '78 switch working but the 'flash to pass' probably wouldn't work.

The "trick" 2nd connector is for the passing switch.

So it's not a matter of rewiring. You would have to add a switch in there

That 10 pin looks very close to a molex style connector.

Odd as it sounds I think you might be able to modify a PC power supply molex connector  (24 pin or similar or to 4 pins etc.) to work. They use a very similar pin layout in two rows of about that size. Wouldn't be 100% perfect but probably quite workable.

IF needing both ends you could also depin the male/female on both sides and swap out for new more easily obtainable bodies with the same pins.

The most comprehensive website I can think of for connectors is Mouser Electronics, but holy cow, patience is key. You have to pore over thousands of small parts with small pics and sometimes very little info. It helps to know the trade name of that connector, like Delphi, Aptiv, TE, Molex, AMphenol, Deutsch, Metripack, etc

Mouser lists 41,307 different "automotive" connectors. https://www.mouser.com/c/connectors/automotive-connectors/

Just clean up those pins with contact cleaner. The connector otherwise looks fine

Alternatively, jigger those pins out of the connector and replace the bad bins, while keeping the connector

This is the closest I could find. Same style and shape and same pins, but only 6 pin - https://www.vintageconnections.com/products/yamaha-control-connector

This is why I said molex connector, found in basically every PC made these days and available as cables very cheaply in a variety of pin numbers. 4 being common for power and 10 to 24 for PC power supply connectors.

Or you could do what my local flavor insanity says to do and make your own connectors and just buy pins (I'll save you having to see all the photos my 3D printed connectors).

Buy 12in Molex LP4 Power Extension Cable M/F - 4 pin Molex Power Connector - 4 pin Power ...

Well this is interesting, look what I found with an image search:

I wonder if this is a more common JDM style connector we just don't have the search terms for.
