ggzilla
I long thought this was a Datsun USA offering, but the brochure makes clear it is from Interpart. I remember back in the day Interpart made bodykit parts for all kinds of cars like Vega, Pinto and Datsun Found a photo of the Medallion on the webz, however i think it is a repro because it is not "four-color" like the catalog states. The illustration shows the wreath having two colors 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
I wish I could find an actual picture of the medallion. Or the back of one. My 510 has holes on the c pillars which are clearly for an emblem. No idea what went there though. They are perfect holes and exactly the same on both sides. Quote Link to comment

The illustration shows the wreath having two colors When I bought my 1973 510 2dr out of Saginaw Michigan 3 years ago, I made a deal with the guys brother, who was the executor (RIP Brian 🙏), to clear out the garage of any & all Datsun stuff! We also found some other car parts, that turned out to be for his 1978 Mustang II Cobra (that car was long gone). His bro was NOT a car guy, so I took it all & made a deal to split the money for anything NOT Datsun (I ended up sending him almost $800 iirc!). Not only was there a pair of NOS front fenders, but an NOS Interpart rear louver 3pc set (all Cobra's were hatchback), in the box!! I had it all hauled to Colorado & sold the fenders to a guy in Wisconsin (even arranged DELIVERY with a local Colorado racer, heading to Road America!!), sold the rear louvers LOCALLY...............but I kept the Interpart box, as wall art!!! 😎 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
What's a set of Hitachi L16SSS SUs on an L intake worth today I wonder? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
used condition, a complete set is still quite reasonable. Maybe $750? But a rebuilt set is like $1550 from Z-Therapy ($1100 + used cores) Reasonable because * $180 was 14 days of minimum wage in 1972, or 4 days average wage * $1550 is 27 days of minimum wage in 2024, or 7 days average wage Minimum wage varies by location, those are just USA averages. For those that work in Seattle, it's only 10 days minimum wage ($20.76/hour minimum wage) Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I have a set of 38mm flattop Hitachi SUs on a manifold. As I heard it the flattop SUs were used on the L18SSS and possibly on the very late L16SSS. I understand that when the 'new' '71 KH510 L18SSS were available on that last year, the KP510 L16SSS was still being sold at the same time. Not hard to imagine the '71s all having the flattop carburetors then. They still have the choke cables ends attached that were cut in some wrecking yard in Japan when the engine was removed for sale in North America. Also has the PCV valve and that air balancing adjustment screw and tube that is usually removed to 'de-smog' them. Again it may not even be smog related but they usually were removed here and home made aluminum covers installed. There is also a vacuum advance source fitting on the front carburetor. The original air filter is long gone and after market chrome and foam filters are fitted. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
i heard it was the 1973-up that got the flattops. They have a superior air/fuel mixture mechanism and an idle-cut mechanism (pluses), but they are adjusted differently which confuses a lot of people. To me the biggest downside is they don't look as cool as the dome-tops. Nissan Competition sold the flat-tops The bad rep I think comes from the 260Z SUs which are reportedly inferior to the 240Z SUs. But the 510 uses traditional British-style SUs, and the 510 flat-tops are just a variation Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Ahhhhh The 510 Coupe was discontinued for '72, though the regular sedan 510 continued that year. This was so it would not compete with the 'new' 610 coming out in '72 and the 'new' 610-U coming out in '73. The 610 Bluebird U was equipped with an L18SSS engine and round tops to begin with and flattops in September '73 making it a '74 model year car? There was a (JDM only) 610 E which was fuel injected. So my carburetors are likely from a '74 610 Bluebird U, well that is interesting. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Ah, I did not know about the Sedan-only 1972. It looks like they only sold the 4-door in '72 calendar year, not even any 2-door sedans in the JDM Your JDM flattops are probably from the 610 SSS or 710 SSS * The JDM 510 parts catalog only shows the dome tops and the old style manifold without the idle speed screw. This is the last revision 510 catalog. The same manifold was used on 510 1600 SSS and the 510 1800 SSS * The 610 catalog shows the new manifold from 1973.3 with the speed screw and the flattops. Before that the 610 used dome tops. The new manifold is K14, which is the 710 1800 SSS part code In the japan domestic market, the 510 was sold side by side with the 610 wikipedia Nihongo Bluebird article 510 section says "September 1971 --Bluebird U (610 type) announced and reorganized the car model. The 1800cc model and coupe were abolished, and the low-priced sedan 1.4L/1.6L grade became the main grade, and the "Happy 1400" is sold together with the 610 type series " "January 1973 - Discontinued with the appearance of Violet." 610 section "The conventional 510 series was also sold together until January 1973, when it was succeeded by the 710 type Violet." datzenmike
Again, Ahaaaa, definitely a K14 manifold. Thank-you always wondered. You can see those pipes with tissue stuffed in them. The bottom two probably join and the top one goes to the air filter. The screw regulates the air but what does it do? Idle mixture? Back in the day when I got these the 'de smog' procedure was to remove them and make triangular plates to cover the openings. I would just join the bottom two and turn the screw closed. I've seen lots of SU set ups but none with these air pipes. Found a picture of a 710 (Violet) with the SUs. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
nice 710 engine photo yea the Hitachis shown in your pics are an evolution of the original SU design those tissue-stuffed hose connections are the fuel-bowl vents adjustment and hose routing are shown at Hitachi Twin Carb. As far as I can tell, the L-series and A-series use the same setup (Hitachi HTL?) Quote Link to comment
obrut
I have a set of these somewhere with the manifold, I think mine are the 38mm with the K14. Quote Link to comment

So it would seem filtered air is being used for something Found out IMS is for Idle Mix System. I would never have found this out without that picture of the A series system. http://www.datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki/index.php?title=IMS Near bottom of the page. Adjustments Idle mixture (IMS) is possible with the new flat-top Hitachi design. This is a better system than the older style GX carbs, but requires a new way of adjustment. First of all, check the ignition timing and set it correctly Next, check the float levels. Nothing will work correctly if this is off Check oil damper level, and top off with 10W-30 if needed Loosen balance adjusting screw completely Set idle speed to 750 rpm by turning idle speed screw Clockwise: speed decreases Anti-clockwise: speed increase Synchronize the twin carbs by turning Balance screw Turn Mixture screw back and forth until best lean idle is achieved Reset idle speed to 750 rpm Lean out Mixture until speed drops to 725 rpm Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
7 minutes ago, datzenmike said: If it's the fuel bowl vent why an adjustment screw? The tubes are on top of the fuel bowl. The dome-tops have metal tubes that vents down towards the ground, but these vents go to the air cleaner. It's more primitive than the flow guide valve system, but better than before. Later the charcoal canister is used and it really starts mitigating the fumes. Finally we now have PZEV fume control The adjustment screw is an air-bypass system for idle speed adjustment, similar to the Hitachi-Bosch EFI that also debuted in 1973. Not sure how close the two systems are but the tech was a-changin that year Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Prices are fascinating in light of "are today's prices reasonable?" I found these on Yahoo * a used set that recently sold for $660. Old-style manifold, competition carbs and the heat shield. For A12 * Mini A-series nice looking set, buy it now $2,500 * S30: $770, $800, $600 * 510 SSS (carbs only) $220 opening bid. Another set $200 eBay * 240Z carbs w/heat shield (no manifold) $609 buy it now from Canada * Datsun 2000 complete setup $461 buy it now Quote Link to comment
obrut
Mike you said "Back in the day when I got these the 'de smog' procedure was to remove them and make triangular plates to cover the openings." I've read that too and it seems like reading the IMS adjustment procedure you posted, all you are doing is leaning the idle out. So technically you could just close the screw off and that would be the same as blocking them off? However, I don't see how a lean idle would really hurt anything. Did you ever run yours? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
A lean idle is required on ALL carburetors, Holleys, Webers, etc All the manuals have a best-lean idle adjustment procedure, though many peeps put it at best idle (richer idle) to "make most power". But how much POWER do you need at idle? That's just wasting fuel Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
There are two screws: the idle mixture screw and the idle speed screw. 8 hours ago, obrut said: So technically you could just close the screw off and that would be the same as blocking them off? So this is the problem: you one has really taken the time to understand the flat-tops I understood the block-off plates were for the 260Z flat-tops. But on these 38mm Hitachis we are talking about, block-off plate would cover the fuel bowl vents. Not sure what it would do to the idle mixture screw. And why would you want to block them off?
