ggzilla
thanks, that's pretty steep considering the maximum interstate grade is 6% Here are the other pictures of those drivers. They are pamphlets (2-sided) from ~1968 And this one is from a 1971 multi-page brochure from Australia i think (M) 1 Quote Link to comment
RoadRace
Right on! Super cool that there was a series of these advertisement/dealer cards. The last one is the same photo shoot as the card i posted. you can see the trees in the background are the same...Plus the same dude still has blurry hands - he must move his hands a lot lol! EDM620
I'm putting this out to my car club guys, many of us used to race back in the day (former ELCC - Edmonton Light Car Club) and are due for a road trip. One is currently racing a 510 at Mission Raceway so fingers crossed he might enter. 1 Quote Link to comment

obrut
Great to see you got your car back, I saw that car race a few times, Mike is in the same club as me, MCSCC. I might even have a picture of it on track at blackhawk farms, if i find it I'll post it. 1 Quote Link to comment

Stoffregen Motorsports
Vintage racing a Datsun now days is about as expensive as it gets. The hype surrounding a 510 race car means that the buy in is huge. And then the initial build cost, even for a back of the pack tribute car, is in the 10s of thousands of dollars. If you have a car already, you're ahead of the game. But once you turn it into a race car, there's no going back. Now there are a few other Datsun options. Z car, sure, but still expensive. How about a vintage race 610 or 710? Or best bang for the buck... a 1200. 3 Quote Link to comment

RoadRace
it used to be buying the car was cheapest part of racing. If you just want to go race, that still holds true - lotsa cheap hondas and the likes out there. but as Stoffregen Motorsports has said, the buzz around the 510 is real. I have a 3rd gen Camaro i race, its a clean car, sounds great - ticks all boxes of the fun checklist. At the track, i will invariable have a few people looking into the car, taking pics - asking questions...when i rolled the 510 out of the trailer, there was a swarm. people driving down the pits parked behind it, got out, looked all over, asked tons of questions - mostly about the history of the car. This was not normal. 510's tend to have an affect on people, especially when they haven't seen one in a while. i was racing with my cousin, and he has a beautiful T2 SRT Viper Roadster, pro build, national champion car - it was parked right beside the 510 and nobody batted an eyelash at it... 4 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Nostalgia. No one ever drove a Viper to school or lost their virginity in one. No one has fond memories of family outings in a Viper or being with friends who had fun in one. 3 Quote Link to comment

There was this guy by the name of Paul Newman, raced many Datsun/Nissan cars over the years. This was my personal favorite (I owned and competed with one), and turns out to be one of his best as well: This and many more are part of Adam Carolla's collection of Paul Newman's race car history. Stoffregen Motorsports
Producing just over 100 horsepower... Yeah right. Even in 1977 they were making close to 200hp. 1 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
USDM 200SX was 97hp. The same engine the year before was 110hp in the USDM 610 Obviously in racing form it made more HP than stock. Maybe they hired a guy with a smartphone to make those museum signs ... Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Same thing happened at the David vs Goliath race at Goodwood last year. The commentator remarked on the mini's 67hp vs the big Ford. Speaking from experience, our 1275 puts out almost 140hp, not the 67 it came with stock. 1 Quote Link to comment
EDM620
My '77 SX certainly put out more than that stock as well and that was before I modified it. Best memory was a guy in a Belvedere or GTX Mopar who wanted to race, so I let him have a bit of a lead then blew his doors off. Sucker. Beat by Jap Scrap. LOL 1 1 Quote Link to comment

My '76 710 says 110 hp. This was when it was still measured and displayed as Gross HP. At some point accessories (alternator, air pump, water pump, probably a mechanical fuel pump) and an exhaust system were added and Net hp reported to reflect real world conditions for the customer. My '78 620 said 93 hp. Same basic L20B 2 Quote Link to comment

We picked up a historic race prepped mini with a 1275 just recently - pretty sure its running in the same ballpark as yours, looking forward to running it this year. they look like a riot. i watched the car we just picked up race a few years ago and it didn't have much for the 710, but then he had the motor done to full race prep...and he never raced it afterwards, so i reckon its going to be a handful. Are you going to bring the mini down here to race at all? Seems we have a pretty good group with over 30 cars on track at the last race. Next week we go to Laguna Seca for the Sprite Midget challenge. Cars are coming from all over for that race. 1 Quote Link to comment
RoadRace
its a short season for us, we tend to plan it ahead of time, didn't know about this race and it looks like a great time. Laguna Seca is a bucket list track and we'd been talking about going there with the 510, it looks like the mini should be in the trailer as well. will keep this one in mind for next season. thanks for the heads up. I'm going to send my brother to check it out, he's only an hour or 2 away from Monterrey. Edited June 10, 2025 by RoadRace 1 Quote Link to comment
