And if he knows where to get gears?? thanks! Sure, next time I see him. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
710s has H165 differentials with 3.70 (manual) or 3.889 automatic, except the '74 automatic which was the last year L18 before going to the L20B. The '74 automatic has a 4.11. I have one in my '76 wagon which was a 3.70. Best cheapest improvement in performance I've made. I don't know where you would get anything higher like a 4.625. 1 Quote Link to comment

It has a 1.8 liter right now, built by Rebello back in 2016 or so. I have only had the car for two+ years now. I have log books back to 1990. Car was built originally in Oregon and then turned into a B sedan/Trans Am vintage car in Wisconsin about 2002. Photo is from '23. I have done a few things since then and taken off the front bumper. 3 Quote Link to comment

Two-time national champion with that car. If I could have any vintage 510 with bona fide race history, I would want Frellsen's 510. Ermish did a full resto on that years back and a guy named Dave Stone has it now. https://datsun510.com/index.php?/gallery/image/17728-dave-frellsens-510-owned-by-dave-stone-restored-by-troy-ermish/ 3 Quote Link to comment
RoadRace
I’ve seen that one run *i think* the SVRA SpeedTour events. Fantastic car. Quote Link to comment
RoadRace
@datzenmike thanks! he has a 4.625 in it now and wants to get another gear set of the same ratio as its getting worn out. He has a spare alum center section, but it needs different spline spiders i think. He would be interested in any differential parts if there are some for sale 🙂 Iceman510 that is a great looking car! love the 'tribute' black hood stripes on yours! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
4.625 in H-165??? Must be from Nismo. Can he run an H-190? The 510 wagon or '82-'83 S110 200sx had them and may be narrow enough. The '80 720 4x4 long bed had the 4.625 H-190 1 Quote Link to comment

Previous owner had a body shop, so the paint is pretty nice. Now i have to maintain that. I actually had not noticed that my hood and the Frellsen car hood are very similar if that is what you are referring to. 1 Quote Link to comment

Guys used to do this with the alloy H190 3rd member from the 320 pickup and use it in newer Datsuns Dunno if this applies to the alloy H165 e.g. Datsun 1500 roadster unit Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
wow, your car was there when the Gimli Glider landed! On 2/25/2025 at 7:28 AM, RoadRace said: this is the 710 back in 83 when the 767 landed on our track during a race - true story.... 2 Quote Link to comment
RoadRace
It’s not mine 😄 - the 710 is my buddies car, ya, it was there when the 767 ran out of gas and went down. The car usually pops up if you google “Jim King 710”. It was built 100% from the Nismo comp catalogue and raced quite a bit in the US, mostly Brainerd but also VIR and others. There is a Gimli Glider museum in the town of Gimli (2mi from the track) and a sign at the race track as well. a few of the old timers who were at the track that day have no problems telling stories about how it all went down, it’s interesting stuff! Yes you’re correct with the alum 3rd member in the H165. He has that as well, but needs gears… the short 1.3 mile 9 turn track we race on really likes a lot of gear. My 510 had 5.13’s in it, watch the vids above and you can see the dime catch him in the twisty parts and the 710 walks away on the straights… 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Theres a website that sells pieces of that aircraft, salvaged into key rings. https://planetags.com/ 1 Quote Link to comment
RoadRace
Ha! Yes, I work with a guy that just retired and has one on his back pack, he worked on the plane…my brother has one as well. Most the Air Canada guys here do, Air Canada has a Tech Ops center here in Winnipeg. Crown Royal - if you drink, you might know what Crown Royal is, they also sponsored the IROC series when they ran Trans Ams - anyway, they are headquartered in Gimli as well, big distillery there. there is a funny story about the volunteer firemen that were called to action that day the plane came down - but it’s not for posting here …. I will say that you can smell the whiskey being made at least twice a year at the track. 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
We have a small distillery in our town. It makes the place a bit more special. 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Speaking of got it back, I have an Austin Healey Sprite that I sold back in 2000, then bought back 4 years ago. This is not a joke. Not even an exaggeration. It happened just like this - I had a dream that I had the car in my shop and when I woke up, I did a craigslist search for the LA area (I heard it ended up down there) and it was literally the first search result. There was only one pic so I called the guy and had him send me another pic, and sure enough, my shop sticker was still on the lower rocker panel. 14 hours later, the car was back home in my shop. It was obviously meant to be. Now I have no idea what the hell to do with the car. I thought about building another race car out of it, but it is so pristine that I don't have the heart to cut into it. 2 Quote Link to comment

That's right. It's squirreled away waiting for my kids to get old enough. It's also registered and insured for an agreed value $12k, so if one of the now common massive wild fires gets it, I get paid. 1 Quote Link to comment
RoadRace
found this going through my old Datsun stuff on the weekend - while its an original dealer card for the 2dr 510, and from a very rural Manitoba dealer that no longer exists, it shows the OEM had a level of respect for the consumers never seen before or since. look at the back under Climbing ability. RoadRace
definitely a Speedracer vibe in that Ogawa vid. i never even thought of who the people were...the helmet person looks to be a model and not a driver but who knows....the dude's gesturing with his hand and it's blurry - that would probably never make it to print these days, like using Trig to tell the consumer the climb rate of the car, that must have been the text from the Japanese dealer cards and they just used it for the North American markets. I take a head shot of that driver and use it for my pic when signing the 'Speedwaiver' for race events through motorsport reg....nobody's ever said anything, it makes me laugh... ggzilla
yea does sin refer to arrival/departure angle, or to maximum hill-climb angle? And how many degrees is that? I can't figure it out and I've forgot where i put the Datsun grade-climb chart In any case, yes! the ad text shows Datsun was marketing to the enthusiast crowd. By the way, Ogawa was a model, but shot to accelerated fame when she appeared in those 100-octane commercials. They weren't Nissan commercials but Maruzen was a partner of Nissan Service Network. The other pictures show two women 1 Quote Link to comment
