Reproduction and Custom Decal Kits?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! Been a long time since I was active here. Does anyone here have any interest in having the original OEM stripe kits or custom ones made? Maybe some of the race liveries? I've made graphics for vehicles for years now. Would love to come up with some kit options or make something custom for some Datsuns! If you have a worn out one on your car or a good photo of what you want, I can reproduce it. Looking for input. questions? opinions? Interested?

Can you reproduce the metallic looking ones under the hood? I need to reproduce the emissions sticker under the hood of a 510 wagon. Here in California, if your car is out of state, they ask to see the emissions sticker before giving you the license plates.

I believe it's the one below.

I’d have to look into what it would take to make them appear the same but I could definitely come up with something they would probably accept and looks nice. Are they stamped plates or printed decals?

They're printed.

I can take a pic of the one on my 1200. That one is in pretty good condition, considering the age. I'll post it tonight when I get off work.

Thanks

Are you thinking just strip style decals? I'm on a small mission to get the big 4x4 decals on the side of the 720.

Like the ones on this truck

I could definitely remake that. I just need someone with the vehicle whose willing to provide specific pictures and measurements so I can make it to scale. But I'd be willing to tackle any related project, not just stripe kits!

Check this out

recaldecals has two images of the sticker that can be made into a vector image. Anyone that has the stickers now could put a ruler to the letters to get an accurate scale.

Yes that’s all I need. Those photos and I can use the measurement of any two body panels as a reference. Door width, bed length, etc. I can also do way better than that price. I could easily do that kit for around $200-250 using quality materials. If demand was high enough I could make them cheaper than that in larger batches.

If this is something you're interested in, I can remake it. Might take me a while to find the right fonts but other than that its pretty simple.

Does the sticker have a metallic finish? And does the reproduction need to reflect that to be legal? They will be cheaper to print if they can be a solid color. Printing onto reflective materials can be a difficult process to reproduce.

Yeah I think so because I'm going to need something like that to get my wagon registered.

No. I think it can be metallic looking. Can you color it so it looks metallic? They just want it there to read the emissions system the car has.

a reflective type metallic would be hard to do. but I could probably print them on this material. It has a nice metallic look.  https://www.amazon.com/Oracal-Premium-Long-Term-Cutters-Plotters/dp/B081VT4FLD?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=AY6AHC5QX4SBQ&gPromoCode=sns_us_en_10_2023Q4&gQT=2&th=1

Should not need to be reflective.

That material you show is a bit shinier than original.  You should find something matte.

how's this? https://signwarehouse.com/products/oracal-651-matte-adhesive-craft-vinyl-12-in-x-10-yds?variant=40904483340381&country=US&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gQT=2

I had the Fuji Heavy Industries R160 LSD stickers made years ago.  The vinyl guy found a "brushed aluminum" look vinyl, replicated the print & then die cut the corners rounded.  I even had him change the SUBARU lettering to NISSAN!  As far as I know, the emission stickers were a plain bright silver vinyl, with lots of printed info/lettering/text in black.  Issue I see with the emission sticker, is most are badly faded, so you might struggle to find a good clear one to replicate!

I've bought a couple of out of State cars, and I've never had anyone ask for an emissions sticker.  I also imported a wagon from Australia.  There are now independent shops that will do the inspections.  I would call a few, and ask them what they need to see to register it.  If you call three different places, you will probably get three different answers on what they want to see.  (Exactly like the State DMV offices)

When I imported my wagon, I called the DMV directly in Sacramento.  A lady there answered my questions, and gave me her phone number in case I ran into people who were doing the inspections, but weren't terribly informed on the regulations.  The first two DMV field offices failed me and refused to call the boss in Sacramento, the third one finally knew what he was doing and passed it.

Those independent shops are a bit more money, but they are small business owners, and they are easy to deal with vs an asshole at the DMV who could care less if they run you through the ringer.

In my experience with emissions testing in both California and in Washington, they never looked at the labels

They get the specs from their internal database ...

Still, the repro decals I've seen look nice and completes a restoration
