PsychoNaut04
Ive checked brakes, rotors, differential, axels, u joints, suspension. Only thing left is the transfer case for awd. Seriously. Ive been at it all weekend and still cant find the noise. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You had the rear wheels and brake drums off??????? U bolts holding the axle/leaf springs loose or broken? Try braking after shifting the transmission or transfer case into neutral first. See what happens. Quote Link to comment

Took off both axles and left the differential only. I cant still hear the rattle. It’s driving me insane how hard it is finding the source of the sound. When i brake, i change it to neutral. Ill try messing with the 4wd tomorrow Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Could teeth on the differential pinion be broken? Drain the differential. If there's damage there will be metal in the oil. Quote Link to comment
ElliotV
I watched the video and that sounds very rear end like and also sounds like it might have started a bit of a howl at one point? I would at minimum drain the oil and possibly pull the cover I can see the whole rear end shaking like the pinion might be skipping or something. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I thought the right side shook more than the left. Look for metal in the differential oil. Quote Link to comment

Look for metal in the differential oil. to me it looks like the whole axle is wrapping. I agree on draining that diff fluid because something appears to be binding. If mike is right and the right side is shaking more it could be a spider gear or the pinion is ruined and its causing the diff to simulate some kind of slipping. Something is definitly not right in there. Quote Link to comment

Thank you for the help. After days, i finally found the issue, and I hope someone maybe finds this if they come across this too. It was the brand new rotors I bought. I can’t believe it. They look perfect. I’ll be taking them to get cut tomorrow. I put the old ones back and issue went away. Quote Link to comment

I removed them and put the old ones back and issue went away. Im just relieved it wasn’t anything serious. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The drums??? Didn't the brake pedal pulse when braking? That's a clue the rotors or drums are not concentric. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
In the future when any problem arises ask yourself... 'What have I done lately, what have I adjusted or replaced?" The new brake drums would have jumped right up and bitten you. My car just started over heating. I can't imagine why, I just replaced the thermostat. My car started vibrating ever since I had that flat and put the spare on. My car runs like shit even though I just tuned it up with new cap and wires. Quote Link to comment

I tested the brakes by slamming on it at high speeds. I the. purged the front brakes to make sure there was no air right after. i test again and this issue comes up. I thought suspension? Because of its age. differential? From braking too hard? The transfer case? The brakes and rotors are new. There’s no noticeable difference damage. It was extremely confusing. 1 Quote Link to comment

I think saturn or some other company in the early 2000s ish had those issues. My dad bought one of their cars brand new and after 16k miles the rotors and pads were worn out. Went through a whole bunch of bullshit all the way up to corporate of them blaming his driving and one guy trying to say his chevy pickup has done that since new and one emergency stop will ruin rotors and stuff like that. I have locked up the brakes on my 85 twice on dry pavement and a couple times in fresh rain but never had a issue truck still stops great and doesn't shake at all when I am on the brakes. You think i may have damaged the new rotors by braking hard after new brakes? I just wanted to make sure they were working. I did multiple hard brakes Quote Link to comment

I just wanted to make sure they were working. I did multiple hard brakes its possible either you didn't bed the pads right or like I said they are just shitty rotors. On some "performance" stuff like powerstop they have a bedding process like slow stops then hard stops all from certain speeds to lower speeds etc. So your hard stops could have hurt them but normal rotors I don't think I have ever had a issue just slamming on the brakes to make sure they are good. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
They are drums. Rotors are on front and are for disc brakes. Probably poor quality China cast and machined drums. Take to a machine or brake shop and have them trued up. Quote Link to comment

Good luck finding a place that can turn them these days none of the oreillys here ever has anyone who can run them and I don't know of anyone local that does it. Can't even get shoes and clutches relined without driving 2hrs away. Used to have a local place but they have been out of business for a while. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
One asshole told me you need to get them turned when brand new. If they sit to long with stuff on top of them. be honest I think 99% of aftermarket disc and drums are slugged in china and machined here on the better NAME Brands . Most is China Quote Link to comment
Thomas Perkins
I had new rotors, calibers, brake pads, lines, master cylinder and 4x4 boots, and seals put on mine almost 4 years ago.I put new shoes, and wheel cylinders on the back not long ago.I did have to put a driver side E brake cable on it long ago,it rusted at where it goes into the back brakes,it was locking up.Nissan still had them in stock,it was 75 bucks. Also put new springs in.And replace the drums.Brakes great. Also back in 2009,had new poly bushings put in.The stock rubber bushings gave out and it wollered out and he welded it back. That caused my tires to turn in at the bottom. These are baby blue. Both sides were worn out.He said this was common on 720 4x4's.It cost over 300 bucks to fix it.The last set of tires,I got 61,000 miles of the BF's.The BF's on there now about 4 years ago.I need to go have them rotated and balanced.I have it done every 6000 miles. It is free.I have the receipt when I had the bushings replace and part repaired.Check your 84 and see how your bushings are doing.I have put over 113,000 miles on it since it was done 16 years ago. These pictures were taking recently.396,000 miles on the speedometer. ElliotV
I will have to get a picture of mine on my 86 took the wheels off last week to put other wheels on to put the wheels that were on it on a 85 im going to get and there was a half inch gap between the bushing and the bracket. I dont know if the nut is loose or if the back bushing blew out but I am glad I haven't actually tried driving it down the road. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
I guess those would be called a compression bushing rather than the front mounted tension bushings of the '80-'82. These triangulate the lower control arm and prevent the wheel pulling to the rear when braking. If worn, the lower control arm(s) will swing to the rear and the alignment will toe out, wearing the tires. Quote Link to comment
ElliotV
I think they are technically called strut rod bushings at least on the later ones. I like the idea but they do seem to be a rust prone spot. Lots of people have posted about having washers welded in there because it rusts out. Quote Link to comment
