Headlight knob trouble

Hi,

I’ve been trying to get my headlights to work (only the brights work and when i switch the plug over the plug from the low beams works but the low beam lights won’t turn on) so I was messing with the switch and it came out and there’s a long wire coming out of the back. Can anyone tell me where that wire is supposed to go? The switch doesn’t click like it used to and just pulls out now.

That single "wire" coming out the back is actually the means to illuminate the knob. This is a fibre that comes from a small box containing a light bulb, used to illuminate both the headlight knob and the wiper knob. The headlight switch and wiper switch do not have internal lights.

The headlight relay can only be in 2 positions high beams or low beams. In the off position it is in the high beam position. The power for the relay to work comes from the parking lights. If no parking lights then the relay can only be in the off position thus you only have high beams.

Check your dash lights or rear tail lights, front and or side marker light are on with headlights. The fuse that powers the dash/parking lights is the 10 amp on the right side of the fuse box closest the steering column and the dash. (I think) The other two are 15 amp. Never trust a fuse by only looking at it. Swap with one of the 15 amp ones see if the problem stays or goes way. The clips that hold the fuse can also corrode and make poor contact. Hopefully it's just the fuse. Find out. If not come back and we'll look farther into this.

Every Datsun owner should have a 12v test light. So handy to know what has power and what doesn't. If you don't have one get one, they are only $5 or so. Any farther than a bad fuse you'll need it.

Never good having trouble with your knob 😁

Like Mike said do you have a multimeter or 12v test light.  Super handy.  I bought a spare head light switch which I think was Aussie $50 or so from ebay as I am using it for some day driving lights on the LED setup.
