Patinaed720
Hello all, just wanted to say thanks to all for the wealth of knowledge i have been able to geek out on since acquiring my 1986 720 4x4. I recently moved into a new house a few months back and introduced myself to my neighbors, one of which was generous enough to gift me his 720 only hours after meeting him. Had been sitting for about 10 years and still fired right up and he drove it to me about 50 feet. I haven't had much time to tinker with it but have drained all the old gas out of it and put fresh gas and did an oil change. Seems to be all original and he claimed his uncle bought it new locally here in Burien washington back in 86. I will be replacing all of the soft fuel lines, and both fuel filters for good measure. Along with changing transmission/transfer case and differential oils as well for the start of freshening her up. Heres a link of some pictures to show it off. Im very excited to slowly make it more road worthy! https://photos.app.goo.gl/YVJuo6STFEQa3cYR8 Any of the information i have been curious about has been in this forum and there's not a bunch of smart a** trolls here, its wonderful. -Dillon from Burien WA 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
At first opportunity when the engine is cold re-torque the head bolts. The Z24 is well known for blowing head gaskets at 10ok intervals. Get this done, it's way easier and cheaper than pulling the head off. It's important. Loosen ONE head bolt and immediately tighten to 60 ft. lbs. Move onto the next bolt. Do any order you like but only one bolt loose at a time. Do this once a year. Next thing is get an '86 FSM (factory service manual) Pays for itself the first time you open it. NOT Haynes or Chiltons. Get the Nissan produced manual. Used from e-Bay. You might also find a downloadable copy in PDF form. $20-$60 don't pay more. GL-4 oil for transfer case, 5 speed and steering box. GL-5 for differential 10w30 Shell Rotella T4 engine oil. (or equivalent) Since '92 oil makers have been reducing their ZDDP levels because new engines don't need as much anti scuff protection, but your engine does. It's in the diesel oil section. DOT 3 brake fluid. Any brand name antifreeze at 50/50 with distilled water. Quote Link to comment
Patinaed720
@datzenmike Thanks for the reply Mike. I will Definitely re torque the head bolts before i drive it down to the shop i work at to work on it some more. It currently has 128k on it, assuming its the original head gasket. A bit nervous to do so, do you think the head bolts will put up a fight when loosening them? id shit my pants if i broke one. Will do with the Rotella, other oils and antifreeze/diluted water. I immediately bought a Haynes manual when i got the truck a few months back. The truck came with an official Nissan "do-it-right" maintenance, tune up and repair manual. This manual only goes into so much detail about more basic up keep. Is the haynes one not a reliable source of information? id prefer to not go out and spend more money on another Manual. datzenmike
It just copies the Nissan one so easy to drop the ball on some info. Also the barely 1/2" thick Haynes has to cover all 6 years of production so much is left out. The Nissan FSM is almost 2" thick and only THAT year. No useless info on an engine no longer used. It's all '86 and in depth. 1 Quote Link to comment

Do it as Mike outlined above, you’re not going to break a head bolt. 1 Quote Link to comment
