MakinSparks
Hey guys, sorry i haven't found what i was looking for in here yet about this topic. Although, it's probably becasue i kinda suck at using the search feature i think. Anyway, gonna change the stock points distributor on my '73 620 L16 soon. Too much shaft play. Sorta cheaped out and got a e-bay aftermarket electronic replacement for now... Pretty sure i can stab the new one and find the correct firing order since i have the current plug wire locations and rotor orientation. My questions are about the wiring. Do i need a new coil with different ohms? What should it be if so? Can i completely remove the 6v ballast from the circuit? And finally, we are really only talking about two wires and a vacuum hose? Or am i missing something else? Any napkin doodle schematics available? Thanks for any help. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The EI distributor should just drop in place. You will need to time it. This is an actual matchbox type knock-off distributor? Then you will need a matching EI coil say from a '78 or '79 S10 200sx. You won't be needing your points coil and ballast. Just connect it up like below. IGNORE THE 1.6 OHMS RATING OF THIS COIL just get one from a '79 200sx, 620 or A10 HL510. Quote Link to comment
MakinSparks
The 75 buck cheapo dist. from ebay does not have an external module. I read on another post that the unit is complete with igniter inside. If that is not the case, I will need to source a module i guess. Is that what people are talking about when they are using a GM part? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Post a picture of under the cap. Later designs had the module under the rotor. Geez $75 don't expect too much. Quote Link to comment

MakinSparks
75 bucks might be a slight exaggeration. But i am pretty sure it was not much more than a hundo anyway. I can only assume the little black gizmo with the wire connected to it, is or could be the module. But at this point i might as well be building a spaceship to Mars. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yeah, that should work. Quote Link to comment
MakinSparks
Thanks for the help. One more question, am i right in thinking that the blue wire would go to the neg term on the coil and the red go to the positive? I mean red is usually "hot" and the blue seems to be without insulation on the connector in the distributor. But of course, I've been wrong before. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Don't know about after market stuff... but probably right. Coil positive also has the switched ignition power source (Back/White stripe) and the start signal (Black/Red stripe) from the ignition switch. The blue wire is the ground that is switched on and off by the distributor. It should have instructions with it. Quote Link to comment
