85 Nissan 720 4x4 2.4 Thermostat.

Recommended Posts

Are Nissan 82C thermostats good. They are 179.6 degrees.I have been using the Auto Zone's Duralast brand. They are 180 degrees. It says that they open more and they take longer to bleed.Which is true from using them.Which means that the temperature will not go to half way like it is suppose to.It goes a good ways under half way.A while back,I checked and changed everything and gauge, stayed the same.So that told me Auto Zone's thermostats will not give a oe reading like the Nissan thermostats.I noticed other 720 owners have the same issue but not realizing it is the thermostat.I am going to get a Nissan.one and see if the temperature goes halfway like stated in the FSM manuals.I have a newer sender, sensor, another temperature gauge and new antifreeze and the song remains the same.10 dollar Auto Zone thermostat. It opens too much to get it to get at the right temperature.Which says it is not really a 180 degrees,Like maybe 165- 170 degrees plus heater does not get hot as a 180 degree thermostat. These were made so engines would not run hot.Nissan sells these thermostats on Ebay, cheaper than at dealers.I will get back here after I get it and install it and see the out come versus Auto Zone.10 bucks for Auto Zone 30 bucks for Nissan. Also looked at Rock Auto parts and the part number from Autozone matches up to the cheapest one Rock Auto Part sells.

Z series thermostats are mounted sideways or on edge and should have a 'jiggle valve' and it, positioned at the top or 12 o'clock position to let any air bubble past it. If you don't have the jiggle valve a 1/8" hole drilled at the top will work. This small hole will let internal air out as the radiator is filled and is the only place a small bubble may be trapped as the cooling system is self bleeding as soon as the thermostat opens anyway.

I don't think the temperature gauge/sender is sensitive enough to differentiate one or two degrees. All my past Datsuns and the 720 dash that was in my 620 including the L20B that was in it and the later Z24 that was swapped in all read just above half way in the marked 'run range'. Nissan never put numbers on their gauges for the simple reason that the consumer does not know how to interpret what he reads. Instead it's merely an indicator of some change. If the gauge suddenly starts reading higher or lower than usual they know something is wrong.

Generally a gas engine will run better slightly hot than slightly cold. Clearances are closed up, oil lubricates better and fuel is more fully evaporated for proper and complete combustion.

I got a new extra Auto Zone thermostat.I am not putting it on.I am going to put the Nissan one on when It gets here.Today,I finished up on my leaking hose under the intake manifold.I did put a different clamp on it.Last time it didn't start leaking right off.I did sand and used a scrub pad on the end that the hose goes on.When I started it up with the radiator cap off to bleed the  air out.My temperature gauge only went up about a 1/4 till the thermostat opened.I also have a new hose on the way with the 3 way connector. Before I started using Auto Zone's thermostat. It would open a hair over half way, then go down to half way.And always stayed at half way when driving.

I got my hose that goes to the three way connector under the intake manifold.I also got my Nissan thermostat. The seller that sold me the Nissan three way connector was trying to scam me.I got my money back today from Ebay.He has a good rating but that means nothing.Nissan is out of these but Ebay has some for sale.I bought it back on Nov.8.The tracking, kept saying on the way to next location, then on Nov 17,it stopped. The seller even said to get a hold of the post office.I told him,it is not showing where it's at and I am not chasing it down,he said he was going to the post to drop some stuff off.I didn't hear from him,so I got a hold of Ebay, and they said they would step in Nov. 27,I then sent the seller a message, telling him again,I want a refund.I got it put in my account today. These sellers will post the same parts under another name they use.So now I am stuck.Ebay will not let you get scammed. My leak is leaking.I will mess with it again,on my Thanks giving time off.The little outlet you see in the picture that the hose connects to is leaking their.Done tried 2 new hoses and two clamps.Maybe the angle of the connector needs to be turned a little, may be causing the hose to bind and create the leak.I am going to put the thermostat on and see if gauge goes higher to the  middle.

Maybe I need to turn the hose around and install it.Hose done went up 6 bucks since the last one I bought not real long ago. They have the Nissan logo stamped on it.Nissan calls them water hose. But no water goes thru them.Should be coolant hose.

Now,the part says it is in Atlanta. So I may get it.Nothing wrong with the intake manifold. It is leaking at the hose that connects to the  3 way connector that connects to the hose that goes to two way connector..I need a 3 way connector. Why in the world would I replace a good intake? Here is the 3 way connector. This is the problem.Leaking where the hose connects .Nothing to do with the intake.Where the 3 way connects to the intake is good?

To give you a better view of what I am seeing.Above the oil pressure switch is the 3 way connector. The hose on the left is good, the hose on the right is the one that has a drip. The connector that screws into the intake is good. The drip is at the oil pressure switch, the drip also travels down that hose onto the oil filter.I am now going to wait and see if the 3 way makes it here. When I replaced the oil pressure switch cause the of the leak,is when I noticed the leak.I took the oil filter off and alternator,I will do it again, also putting a new thermostat in.Not a drop came out of the oil filter when I removed it.That was strange. No leak at the intake.Could be a crack in the part that the hose connects to.Leaks at the top of connector cause coolant is traveling down hose,if leaking at bottom it would not do that.If I get new connector then I can see what is up.

HI Ya'll.Here is my 3 way connector.By doing the measurement on the hose connector. It seems that the hose clamp I am using is to wide and is gripping the lip part of the connector and causing the hose not to seal and leak.Nissan does not sell the hose clamp for these.Check out the picture and you will see.The top of the connector sticks out to a vee where you can't get the hose over it completely.I need a clamp 1/2- 5/8 inch wide.I will try a smaller clamp.Suppose to rain tomorrow.See how far I have the clamp away from the connector. It is clamped on the end part and not sealing.I do have it farthest it will go over.

The first hose I replaced long ago was so swollen. That is when I changed the clamp to a wider one not realizing that it was gripping on the end lip and not sealing. As soon as a I eat Thanksgiving Dinner,I will get started.I did post that hose on here when I did it,I just cleaned my shed the other day and tossed it.

Because on Monday, you appeared to say that you could not get the three way connector you needed in order to stop the leak. That’s why I suggested finding another intake with a good connector.

Ok Ya'll.Here is the comparison. The thermostat on the right is a Brand new Nissan one.See how smaller the opening is.The thermostat on the left is what I just took out of my 720 .It is  a Auto Zone one.It has a wider opening as they say on their site This may be the reason my temperature gauge on dash is only reading 3/8's up.Suppose to read 1/2 way up.I went thru alot trying to figure out the cause a while back, put in new temp.sender, new temp.sender anther temp gauge.Same reading.New water pump.I also have a new Auto Zone thetmostat, and this one that is good, but why they put a bigger opening is a wonder why.
