jerryt
Well I finally got my upper gasket set. And my timing chain wedge. I have the motor at top dead center. I have never taken the head off without disassembling the entire motor so I have a few questions. 1. With the motor at top dead center do I place the wedge between the chain with the curve going towards the passenger side. And how far does the wedge go in between the chain? 2 Once the wedge is in the motor. How do I mark the sprocket? 3 with the head of and going to the shop for a once over. How do I set up sprocket and valve timing? Thanks Jerry Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
1/ The curve side goes to the right or passenger side. 2/ You need to mark the chain and the sprocket so the chain goes back on in the same location. Clean with carburetor or brake cleaner and use a magic market? 3/ Do not lay the head with the combustion chambers side down. This could bend a valve stem. When the head returns make sure that the cam is in the TDC location with the dowel at the front at the top or 12 o'clock position before installing on the block. Line up the sprocket and chain marks you made and fit the cam onto the cam dowel. It should fit right on with the slightest wiggling of the cam to line up the dowel and hole in the sprocket. jerryt
well I finally took off the cylinder head on my 1600. I looked and looked for a tear or crack in the gasket. None. I think the head gasket motor on the car was the original. I think it just got old. I dropped off the head to the machine shop they will check it for me. Cross your fingers.
