jerryt
I finally started taking things apart. I took off the intake and got water into the port. I could see the water seepage into the intake runners. But I have a bigger question. There is a piece of wood you put in between the chains that rest on the guides. The repair manual gives the dimensions. So this wood will keep the chains in place? Then I take off the head bolts and can sprocket. Last time I did this I had the entire engine apart. I just want to replace head gasket and intake and exhaust gasket. thanks jery Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
It does more than 'rest on the guides'. it is hammered down and wedged tightly so the chains can't move and this holds the tensioner in place. It works but i prefer something that fits all the way down and physically blocks the tensioner in place. They are hard to find. I made this for the Z24 I was working on. It is slightly springy and the tip presses directly on the chain at the tensioner when pushed down from above. It does not need to be pounded down in place. I've heard that a folded garden hose also works if pushed all the way to the crankshaft sprocket. Quote Link to comment
mojojojo78
I bought this off eBay. It worked good. I had to really hammer it down in there, but it did what it was designed for. This one is for the Z series engine, but they are practically the same as the L series. https://www.ebay.com/itm/271921295566 Edited October 2, 2024 by mojojojo78 Quote Link to comment
jerryt
Mojojojo. I saw that on Amazon. Did it work pretty well? I looked for full length timing chain holder. Only found one full length to push against the chain tensioner. thanks jerry Quote Link to comment
mojojojo78
It worked good for me. I did have to make sure I had it shoved in there. I did wish it had something at the bottom to hook it into the chain a little better. I only had my head off for a couple of days. Quote Link to comment
