Help finding father's old 240z

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am sending this message in the hopes of, at the very minimum, getting some advice on how to proceed with what will, arguably, be the most grueling task I will ever undertake.

My dad used to race SCCA in the early to mid nineties. He was active in Oklahoma, Ohio, and Georgia, and a couple of other states if I'm not mistaken. He later sold his car after graduating from college then moved to Texas.

He's not doing well health-wise these days, so I've decided to take one last crack at trying to find his 240.

I have detailed accounts of many of the races he was in, how many podiums he had, a really bad crash he was in, what tracks he raced at, a couple of the mechanics he used, name(s) of and old sponsor, the approximate year of the vehicle, the state he was in when he sold the vehicle, and what colors it was. I believe I can also get a list of some of the modifications that were installed, as well as what engine was dropped in it (not 100% about that last one though).

I've also got a photograph of him with it, as well as boxes of 1st place trophies. The photograph and trophies will be hard to get to, so I'd rather avoid driving to another state before I can start searching, lol.

Does anyone have any advice on where I should start? I was thinking of approaching a P.I. but the cost of doing so could climb rapidly, and I'd rather not drain tens of thousands before I have a chance to actually buy the car.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks,

B.

I don't have Facebook, but maybe you do.  There are a couple places where Datsun vintage racers congregate you could try posting.  I think you are going to need photographs to spur memories.  Post the names you know.

Did he run in SCCA or in a vintage race group?  All SCCA cars had to have the log book registration # stamped on the roll bar hoop (vertical), drivers side, right near waist high...........this was mandated for tech, so they could quickly identify any given race car.  There will also be a small drilled hole right near that stamped #, so tech could measure the wall thickness of the roll bar/cage.

We race 240Z's in vintage, so there is no registration/log book # stamped on the roll bar.  If he ran in vintage, what group..............VSCDA, SVRA, HSR etc??

Only real issue, is that race cars can be sold across the country etc, so that complicates locating, without any buyer info etc...............BUT it can be done thru networking!!

........another thing I thought of was suggested above, but old photo's should show the class/group the car ran in, if it was SCCA.  That is just another "clue" that could help!

Kinda looks like a post that will go nowhere, if the OP does not come back..................phooey! 😆
