A Certain Blue 510

Recommended Posts

Ended up unexpectedly getting today off, so got some work done last night.

Grille and valence installed. Also 3D printed some TPU floor plugs (file in 3D printerama thread, link below) and laid down some sound deadener, did the floors, roof, and doors. Couple spots I still need to finish up but it was past midnight last night when I was working on it so called it quits.

You're gonna have to add 1968 510 to your signature

Are those GE Nighthawk headlights?

It's a 72 I just put the 68 grille on it.

Headlights are UNI-SHINE off Amazon, had good reviews and were actually DOT approved.

510 dash pad I reworked. Picked up a reasonably good shape one, filled all the cracks with UV resin and flattened/sanded and then recoated about a billion times with a rubberizing coating. Couple of resin/clear interlayers too and final coating for finish. And installed.

Not in love with this carpet though. Still needs some fastening down and cleanup around the edges. Trying to get this piece in so I can work on getting the seats installed. Still need to finish up the front part but ran out of sound deadening (on order).

Seat initially mounted and bolted in, did some test sitting in it to make sure it was going to be comfortable and work correctly. Decided I needed to make some minor bend changes to the sliding lever as it hits the crossbeam at the furthest back position a bit making a bit of a pinch point for fingers. Pulled the seat back out so I can finish up the interior easier.

Further details:

Trying to decide if I want to make a headliner or just leave it as the kilmat covered metal, I do have the bows but don't want to pull the glass.

Also, trying to decide if I want to add foam sound deadening to the door interiors, all have the butyl rubber kilmat on the metal but not sure if this would help.

The trunk also needs attention once I have the fuel delivery sorted to where I like, might kilmat it and then carpet it.

Overall goal is to get the interior noise reduced as much as reasonably possible.

I need to make new fuel lines as it is cut about a foot or two before it would normally end where it meets the rubber line from the tank. Yes, I could just run rubber hose to that point as it isn't far but I don't like shortcuts like that, could also probably put a junction in at the cut part and just bend up the couple feet it needs, but will likely just remake the whole thing as one piece of line.

$88/set, look good

I've been seeing DOT approved for years. My understanding is the Department of Transportation doesn't actually approve anything, they just provide the requirements and it's up to manufacturers/distributors to meet them. Does DOT certify "dot approved" headlights?

seats look good. Did they bolt to the 510 seat rails, or did you make some sort of adapter?

Adapter plates, basically steel plates that move the holes over an inch or so either side.

Holes in the base of the seat are actually spaced the same as the 510 seat rails back to front, just a bit narrower though. Could have used the original 510 rails actually with just a bit of a spacer at the base of the seat too but did not have a full set so used the ones that came with the seat. Had to bend the handle a bit with a press as it got closer to that crossbar than I was comfortable with at full push back of the seat.

Also, didn't take pictures of it but I've already put the door seal trim over the metal edges and refurbished and installed the sill plates. Been a bit lazy about crawling under the car and finishing up the fuel lines though.

The carpet color is growing on me though, color palette for the car is grey or silver/blue/black, so it is at least consistent. I'll probably throw a splash of a brighter accent color in somewhere if I feel like it (like the red driveshaft, thinking Red Advan A3A wheels maybe 😁).

Rear seats and all seat belts mounted. Sourced some shoulder belt style non-retractable belts for the back (still need to mount shoulder straps, waiting on me figuring out the rear parcel tray and trim). Behind the seats I built a fiberboard partition to seal off the trunk from the cabin. No pictures but new fuel lines made and run most of the fuel system is hooked up at this point (aside from the final hosing to the evap tank). Added in extra wiring if I want to go to a trunk mounted electric fuel pump too. Probably will sort out the door panels and kick panels next and clean up the wiring for the fuse boxes. Still need to figure out the exact configuration of the heater core controls though and finish off the dash.

Center console cleaned up nicely, still needs final mounting and the shifter rubber sorted. Front seats will wait until I finalize the pillar trim pieces and headliner, most likely will make a custom fabric piece to cover it.

Is that a custom console? Very clean design

It is, picked it up at Powerland this year, had to make a few modifications to it though. It actually has a second piece that slants up towards the dash that I probably won't install. Also, I'm starting to like it more than I did before so it will stay in the aluminum finish.

Not perfect but not bad for a mad idea I had for a headliner and interior trim. Also, shoulder straps on the rear seats to. Getting closer, need some small bits like mirrors and an exhaust, which I will need to figure out the routing on. Also, clean up of some of the interior wiring/fuse boxes. Technically at this point if I aired up the tires and put the front seat in it could be driven.

Couldn't find the heater fan control knob so made my own (edit: actually found the knob later, go figure). Still need to hit the indicator groove with some white paint though.

Heavily modified from this file: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:952514

Fixed the hood release as the cable was completely gone. Amazon bicycle brake cable ~$5 and enough to do 4 of them if I felt like it. Did have to trim down the end stop a bit to fit the hood release. Drilled out the rivet, made a wire loop with ferrule and used a bolt instead. Cleaned it up, painted it, and installed it but no pics.

Also, sourced a grant steering wheel adaptor 4581. I actually have a new aftermarket steering wheel that came with the car so will likely put it on now as unfortunately the one on it now is off a '68 and the horn button pad I have (with intact metal ring) is the other style instead.

Something else I'm working on. Printing out currently to doublecheck the bolt spacing.

ARMREST-HANDLE-Copy.thumb.jpg.108c06827c32d39ad21121c8597c6c85.jpg

Also, somehow I have 3 rights and 1 left for the interior door pulls so will be trying to source those soon and 3 of the correct bottom type window roller handles and the 4th of a completely different style (not pictured). Been putting together a list of parts (rear view mirror, visors, knobs, etc..) I need to buy. This shell came with a box of mixed parts with a few duplicates of some stuff (i.e. better than what was pulled off usually) so occasionally while digging will find something I thought I was missing.

Those will be nice. They look like the stock armrests which always rot away

Outside of USA, some 510s came with door pulls, which are a simple strap-type thing, but no place to rest your arm

Test fit piece, likely usable but I tweaked it a bit to give more clearance for the bolt heads as it was a bit tight.

This was also testing a new plate for the prints too that gives a carbon fiber look, prints on its side so very strong. I'll likely upload the file when I finish.

Armrests will be next but take longer to print so decided to do the door pulls first.

I probably have what you need as well, but maybe not 3 window cranks.  Let me know if you would like me to look.

Thanks, but don't worry about it.

I only needed one window crank, I have 3 (of type shown). I'm mostly putting together a list to do a bulk buy, probably from Keeper. Piece by piece for this small stuff ends up spending a lot on shipping vs part cost.
