The bottom 4 stud washers are a special cone shape.

 

Look at it this way... the bottom 4 stud washers have to bridge across between the header and the intake flange and clamp both. The intake flange is 1/2" thick and headers are always thinner so the intake gets clamped properly and the header not so much and the gasket blows out. Some header flanges have spacers welded on to thicken the flange in this area so do the same.

 

You could carefully grind away the intake flange to the same thickness as the header flange. I'm told this is frowned on but it works. The intake is well supported by the top 4 bolts. I don't see a problem so you decide.
